I have found 2 darling little girls that are for sale and I don't know if I should buy them. Can anyone tell me about the dwarf mini's? I know they can have a difficult time, so I am asking for your advice.

Here's some info on them......They are 5 hh's, weigh 40 pounds and were born Feb 2008.

They are also a good ways from me so I will have transportation cost. What is a good price for them ? Thanks for your time.

I am no expert but when I was searching for my own mini I was warned to avoid them. Yes they can be cute....but they have health problems and some can be quite serious. Also I believe that they tend to have shorter life spans. You can check the Dwarf Forum on here.

I'm sure there are others on here that can advise you further.

I would never recomend spending money to purchase s dwarf. These poor horses are destine for a life of discomfort, leg problems, high vet bills and early deaths.

I would recomend saving your money and buy a very small, but healthy Miniature horse. You can find them out there under 26".

If all of us would not buy a dwarf, then the market for them would dissapear and they would no longer be exploited.

You have gotten some good advice. RUN away. And even though you think they are darling.....which I am sure they are...... FOR DWARVES.......they are darling in all the wrong ways.

I AGREE!!!!!!!!!!

I've never had one nor could I give you the advice as to get them or not.

Personally, I would find someone who has dwarfs and ask them about their care and expenses (I think there is someone in wyoming who has a few). There is always someone out in the world that needs to care for these little guys.

I agree with everyone else though. You shouldn't have to pay a lot or any for them because of the money that you'll have to spend for their extra care.

Thanks so much everyone and I am going to pass on these llittle ones. I don't have the endless pocket book and my heart couldn't take it. It would also be too hard on my grand daughter so yes we must pass. Thanks so much everyone, Kim

Glad you're passing on buying them, Kim, for a number of reasons, but mainly as I personally don't think anyone should be making money off of selling dwarves period!

They are special needs and if the breeder is unwilling/unable to care for them, then an appropriate adoptive home should be found or have them humanely put down if they are that severe.

Buying them just encourages those type of breeders to continue producing more of them and they so often sell to unsuspecting buyers that do not fully understand what is necessary to properly care for them.

There are many smaller 'pet' minis out there for your grand-daughter and you to enjoy without inherent problems.

All good advice; Diane and Michelle---especially well-said!

I agree wholeheartedly with the advice given here.

These sweet little "mistakes of nature" take specialist care.

I thin there is something morally incorrect about even offering one for sale...they should be passed on to someone who knows how to care for them and can afford it, not sold...they are going to cost so much, really the seller should pay the purchaser for taking them on!!!

People that offer dwarves for sale generally use the excuse that they are asking for the purchase price to ensure that the dwarf will be cared for properly and appreciated (or however they word it). I've never thought that was a valid reason.

For myself, I might "rescue" a dwarf but would never buy one. I think there are many that are like that. Some of the best homes out there would take a dwarf & give it the best life possible, provided that they didn't have to pay money to take the dwarf. By charging a fee for the purchase of the dwarf, many of these good homes are eliminated. Besides, there are very expensive horses being mistreated and poorly cared for, so charging money for a dwarf doesn't ensure it will be properly cared for and well looked after.

It depends on what they are being sold for.

If they are being sold cause they think its cool or that they are worth money because they are so small, then no.

If they are selling them to try and find a good loving home who knows about them and knows what they are getting to then yes I say go for it.

I don't really think there is a "Market" for dwarfs. After all even if everyone stopped buying them and there became an absolute no market, dwarfs WILL still be born. There is nothing to be done, Its in the miniature horse breed. The best thing to do is keep studying and learning about it, and quit critisizing everyone else for having produced a dwarf before.

Well Im going against everyone here.... I HAVE bought a dwarf. She was my first one and have had NO regrets getting her and she has had NO health issues and will be 6 on July 26th. She has very straight legs but an undershot jaw and I have to keep her teeth ground down. I wouldn't go into getting or owning a dwarf without learning about them. What to expect.... and be ready for heartbreak if and when you get one. I have been VERY blessed to own 3 dwarves, 2 with no issues and one with very bad feet, who I have given to a lady who can keep up with his feet better then I can. Don't get a dwarf just to have one. I don't think they should be advertised as "Micro Minis" or "Midget Minis" and made to be what a mini should look like. I educate with my dwarves to get it out there that they are NOT to be bred and shouldn't be sought after. All in all they make WONDERFUL pets if you are well educated in their health problems and short life spans....
