I have a beautiful mare that had a filly 2 years ago. She was NOT rebred that year(2003) and she was not bred in 2004 due to my surgery. This year I pasture exposed her to a 3 year old stallion.

She has her 2 year old filly in the pasture with her, most of the time. The vet could not see any problems on ultrasound.

My question is:

Is it possible she doesn't want to breed because she still has her filly with her?

Have any of you experienced this, with a mare that wouldn't breed because she was still being a mom to her filly?( even though the filly is 2?)?

Thanks!

Robin,

ANYTHING is possible. I would definitely pull her 2 year old filly from her by next Spring.

I would definitely pull the filly. I had 3 mares this year that didn't come into heat because they had foals by their sides. I know which ones DON'T come back in when they have their foals which is about 8 out of 25 of our mares. I think it's pretty common. I've never had a foal in with the dam for such a long time. The foal is not nursing is it??? We usually put our younguns back in with the broodmare band when they are 2 years old but our broodmare band is big and by that time they've forgotten about mommy. I'd actually try pulling the filly away a couple months before you want to start breeding. That'd give the mare time to adjust if she thought she was still caring for her filly.
