Here we go. A timely article. Just watch your mares closely for premature udder development.....I guess I should say FEEL your mares since you can't see what's going on with all that winter coat. Check mares at least every other day and ....

Yep, it's that time of year again. I have just started checking mine - and watching them more closely. I have one mare with a history, who will probably go on SMZ before long.

Very good article. I've started checking my mares. Found one of them to have an infection on one side of her udder a couple of weeks ago. Not placentitis or mastitis, but probably caused by an insect bite or a puncture wound. Cleaned it and started her on SMZ's. It's now healed and the swelling gone. Without a 'hands on' feel, I would never have noticed with all the winter hair.
