Our vet uses a mixture which actually bubbles the utuerus clean - (much like vinegar and baking soda bubbles). He learned it from a repro specialist vet in TX. It has worked great for us here- really amazing. I will send you the information in a PM.

Its not very good for the uterus, but it gets the job done! Kerosene works too (believe it or not) but again, not a very good potential for healthy reproductive future. There are lots of techniques that can be used as a fall-back, but they aren't usually first choices!

Dr Taylor - Yes, this technique has been around for a while, but just has not been utilized much. There seems to be renewed interest in it.

You are correct that no one treatment is going to be 100% every time. That is why every situation is not the same and may require the use of different treatments.

NO- it is NOT hydrogen peroxide or kerosine.

This mix, to which I am referring, is a first choice for flushing by my repro spec vet. This mix and method is used in a repro/ ET center - the recip mares receive this flush there - it is routine- so I would believe it is fine for the uterus. Personally, our mares are very healthy in their repro tracts.

Thank you! Is this performed while the placenta is still retained, or after it's expelled?

And GOOD NEWS!!!!! My vet just called me and said while she was in the stall with the mare about 20 minutes ago she expelled the placenta, in its entirety! They will keep her today and tomorrow for uterine infusions and we will be able to bring her home late tomorrow afternoon, or perhaps after another infusion on Saturday morning, depending on test results. I'm a happy camper!

This flush can be used at any time. I specifically asked my vet about that very thing a few months ago. It generally only takes one flush. Saves time, money, stress on the mare, and stress on the owner. It is VERY effective!

Sorry you had to experience that, but thanks for sharing.

We've only had one early abortion (like you described) with retained placenta (the only retained placenta past about an hour). We had the vets out dosing with Oxytocin all day/night didn't work (they tried tying a small weight (glove with water) to help with tension, but nothing. They were concerned with it not passing and having a worse problem, so we finally took her in to UCD and they kept her in ICU admiinstering fluids and Oxytocin IV. She passed the placenta within 4 hours. Flushed her and she was good to go. She was gone about 7 hours total.

The vet did put her on antibiotics if I remember correctly for a few days, but she was fine and no future foaling issues.

Bill, it was a big relief! I have always had a lot of confidence in my vets. The particular vet in charge of Mama's treatment said she would rather just keep on with the oxytocin, penicillin, and bute, with a small weight attached to the umbilical, and patiently wait, as she said it would be much better if she expelled the entire placenta, rather than try other methods which might tear it and leave parts of it attached to the uterus. She said the entire thing came out, nothing left at all, and Mama will be fine!
