Well my 18 year old mare had a filly this morning almost 4 weeks premature. She is a silver dapple. Her front leg tendons are so laxed. I would be very worried if I had not seen Tony's post some months ago. Here is Tony's link that I saved for some reason. I am glad I did. She is eating and pooping but doesn't have alot of engery yet. I check my mare last night and small bag only. When I got to the stall around 7am there she was and she was still wet and standing up. Made sure she ate and poor little thing wobbles everywhere.

I have named her Cajun Creole Hot Silver Moon Surprise. No barn name yet.

Here she is in my lap after treating her umbilical cord. She is very sweet.

Congratulations! I think that you have nothing to worry about with her legs, she will surely strengthen up in no time.

Those legs will come up in no time - no worries there. She does not look like a preemie at all - she looks fully cooked - and was probably just folded up a bit awkwardly.

You said she was 4 weeks premature - but if that was based on 340 days then she arrived at 312 days - perfectly normal around here!

Let us know how she is doing!

Carlene --

She is adorable!!! And her mom is beautiful, too.

When one of my fillies, Passion, was born this year, she was more bowed back than your filly. Within 3 days, she looked totally normal and she made huge improvements in that direction each day.

As long as she is getting plenty of "stuff" from mom.......and some exercise, I bet she'll be just fine!

She's adorable.

Carlene,

I decided to post on your thread of my experience this year with a preemie filly. Perhaps this may help somebody. My filly was born early, but nursed from the beginning just fine, as well as doing all the other necessary things. So even thought she was weaker than normal ( I attributed that to prematurity) and assumed (uh-oh) she was o.k. At 12 days old, she was dead in her stall in the morning. The vet that did the necropsy said that she died of failure of passive transfer. I do not routinely do IGgs on every foal born, only if they don't nurse within a few hours. Ths vet said something that in all my years of breeding I had never heard of. She said that sometimes in preemies their stomachs are underdeveloped so that they cannot absorb the antibodies in the colostrum. So even though she had nursed, she did not get the proper immunity from her dam.

So I learned a valuable lesson that any premature foal born here will have an IGg run just to make sure. A plasma transfusion would very likely have saved this baby.

Not meaning to scare you, but if your foal remains "without energy" you might want to run the test. Good luck. She is a cutie pie! BTW, her legs don't look that bad to me -- they should be fine.

Thanks everyone she is doing better this afternoon and has lots more energy. I e-mailed Tony and he told me to leave them out so the foal can exercise her legs.

Rita I don't mind and I appreciate the advice. Thanks so much.

I think she is simply beautiful. I would love to have a foal as pretty as yours.
