Hi all,

For the two years my gelding has been having some slight lameness problems, only turning tight to the left now and especially in the cart. when it first started the farrier noticed that he had some hoof wall separation, so we fixed that over a few months and now it is gone. I kept him in work but no tight turns and when his hoof problems were fixed I started working him again, he was better but he wasn't fully better.

We took him to the vet and got leg X-rays. All was good, they saw the lameness and on the xrays found he has thin soles. they said to be careful where I cart him and where I walk him. he has build a bear shoes for when he goes to shows and there are gravel roads we have to walk on to get to rings.

Well even with that he is still not right turning to the left! to the right is fine, to the left it is obvious something is up. I thought it was the breast collar, figuring he needed to free his shoulder up. I am borrowing a friends freedom collar and used it for the first time today, he was better but not sound turning to the left (going straight he is sound). Does anyone else have this problem and if so what do you do? I feel like it's a shoulder problem....

Should I:

1) Give the new breast collar some time, letting him figure out it wont hold his shoulder back anymore?

2) Take him to the lameness specialist?

3) take him back to my regular vet for more xrays?

He is only 12, he is on joint supplements, regular exercise and gets the occasional chiropractic (where he tells me he is always out of whack which is typical for driving horses but not that much, so I feel that information is telling me he is maybe compensating for something hurting? maybe his hips? I personally think it's his shoulder)

He is one of those horses that will do anything I ask without second guessing so I know if it hurts he wont stop, which makes me even more sad, he is my baby boy and I just want him to feel good.

hope you can help!

Thank you,

I suggest an ultrasound on his shoulder, it sounds like your xrays were concentrating on his leg/hoof. I have a horse with arthritis in his shoulder and the ultrasound was very clear with the diagnosis..

:You say you think it is his shoulder, since you are his mom, you have more insight.

There is a product for sore soles, I cannot recall the name.

I agree with madmax at this stage I would be looking at getting an ultrasound on the shoulder. if nothing shows up that there is a problem with his shoulder, then my next step would be to seek advice from the lameness specialist.

Any heat in his left leg at all ?

keep us posted and hoping you find the cause
