Our vet that lives 4 mi. away started charging $75.00 to pull in the driveway so I switched vets. He's been charging $45.00 for the farm call fee.

Everything is going up. Their gas and time, its going to happen.

"Well Im definitely moving some where. It was $90 for a farm call this year its $135 for routine and $ 200 after hours.

Shawna,

I was reading your post and thinking, gosh she sounds like she must be a neighbor. Then I noticed you are from Arizona.

We are near Benson. Are you too? The Vet scenario is extremely familiar, LOL

My vet is An Hour away and Charges 125.00 a farm call and after Hours is an additional 175.00 for emergency .If i take them there during the day it's 25.00. I do as much as I can on my own at home. I was a vet tech for two years so I have a little knowledge and it dose help.

we don't have a big choice on equine vets I think there are maybe two in our area and the other one is closer but I wouldn't even take my dog to them.

We are 11-12 miles from the vet clinic & last time I had the vet out it was $35 for the mileage. An after hours emergency call is an additional $35 on top of the regular price for whatever work has to be done.

My vet actually lives halfway between my place & town, and sometimes she gives me a reduced rate on mileage if it's a routine call & she comes here last thing of the day. That way she comes here & then only has to drive the 5 miles home, not all the way back to town. I've even called her on a Saturday morning & she's come out after she closes the clinic at noon, and she just charged the regular mileage, no after hours fee. Technically it was an emergency call, but because I called during office hours & it wasn't urgent--as in DESPERATE--, she just counted it as a regular call at the end of her day.

We are less than 2 miles, so charge is minimal. They now have started charging 50.00 just to see your horse, that's before anything is done. The 50.00 is then credited to your account. Vets have a hard time getting their money from horse people for some reason. I know not everyone is this way, but there are always those that don't pay. Let's face it, horse vet bills are verrrrrry expensive. It costs 70.00 to power float our minis teeth. dionne

Seems like everything is more expensive in Maine.

I pay $90 for a schedualed visit, double that($180)

for an emergency!! And thats just to step foot on the property,

everything else is extra of course.

And I often see(and envy) the cheap price some people pay

for a gelding in other parts of the country. Average price for

a gelding on a young horse in my area is $350.

But its all worth it knowing they are there for you.

Our call charge has gone up this year from $60 to $70. They are about 35 minutes away up the interstate. I don't begrudge her the call fee with the cost of fuel going up so dramatically - I probably spend $30 in gas myself pulling the trailer up there and back.

Our vet wet to $75 for farm call and think it is $150 for emergency. Everything else is extra once they get out of the vehicle. $350 and up for gelding a mini

Our vet charges $50 for farm call when normally schedules us on his way to and home from the office since he will be going that way anyway, otherwise $75 to stop during the day (9-5). His office is about 15 minutes away. He charges $10 for office visit, per horse.

He is not my vet of choice, the vet i would rather use is 45 minutes away and will not do a farm call this far out unless its an emergency during office hours, so normally we end up taking horses to his office, which is actually cheaper.

Average farm call.. our vet is approx. 15 mins. away.. $65.00.. An emergency call to the farm is $120.00 min.

Regular call is $70, I think emergency calls are close to $95 or more...

Hi Tommy,

I live in Mohave Valley. Equine vets are very far and few here . I have a mare that I purchased from Beth at painted sun. she is going to foal in 2009 and I'm real worried as the vet is so far away so I am reading as much as I can and have been watching we foal a lot . Trying to catch some births . In hopes that if she dose have any problems I can help her as much as Possible. I have seen your Horse on your site they are Beautiful. I also belong to az miniatures group.

My vet charges $65 but they try to book everyone in the same area at the same time so we can split the farm call. Sometimes it works out and other times it doesn't. But that is nice that they try to do that. They always give me the option of bringing my horses there to eliminate the farm call all together. I need to get an ultrasound on both my mares so I am just going to bring them there so that I don't have to pay the farm call this time around. I have never had an emergency visit so I have no idea what they charge and hope I never will!

The clinic I use charges $40 for an office visit (which I am happy to do, evn if it is an emergency office visit, that way, they have all the lab equipement on hand, you only have to wait a few minutes for blood work results), scheduled house call is $60, emergency house call is $90 or $95.

The prices went up since last year, but.....

The vets that work there did not like the fact that the owner was profitting from the meds the animals needed, so they agreed to up the call charge and not profit from meds that the animals needed.

While prices are going up on everything, I must say that the prices above are pretty typical for this area (PA,DE,NJ,MD).

I just had to take a horse to the vet yesterday so this is pretty up to date for my area. The closest vet is about 27 miles away. I always take my horses in rather than have him come out.

I had a mare with a big skinned place on the side of her face with a big flap of skin hanging down. I was hoping he could sew it up, but he said it was cold and needed cut off (happened during the night, no idea how).

My bill was,

$20.oo - Exam (included deadening the area, cleaning, and cutting away the hanging flap of skin)

$5.oo - Tetnus shot

$10.oo - bottle of penicillen

$22.oo - wound spray

$11.50 -Scarlet oil

_____

$68.50 - Total

I can't complain about those prices. Plus, it probably cost $20.oo in fuel to make the trip.

$75 for a farm call. My vet has been very good to me. Only 1 time have I been charged an emergency call and it was $30 more then the regular farm call. That was several years ago and I haven't been charged one since, so no idea what it's up to now. She has always stopped in the same day I called if it was something that her or I didn't feel comfortable waiting until the next day for and she's never charged me an emergency fee as long as I was her last stop on her way back to the office or home. Then again, I have one mare here who is a frequent flyer, so she makes plenty off us as it is

I have no room to complain about the high farm call fee compared to some others on here...my vet has always treated me right and has gone above and beyond what she had to for her "frequent flyer" we have here.

Farm call is a least $50. I live much closer to the vet than backwoodsnanny does. But we rarely have the vet come out unless it's to see the big horses too. We have the mini trailer and always take them there. Plus this place has several vets and one that is small enough to palpate and is a reproductive specialist.
