Great Topic,
I have had up to 13-15 in my herd, before I realized what direction we wanted to go.
Downsized a couple of years ago, to make room for our bloodline.
I had been working for awhile.
Now I have my 3 mares that are what I decided to keep and breed with 14 year old Stallion.
Than when old enough be able to breed with my coming up Stallion Rowdy who is only 28" at 2 years old and Tested Positive for Homozygous .
I want to keep 3 fillies one from each of these mares which I figured have great bloodlines and conformation for what I want to go with this new guy... Have two fillies now, and hope to have a filly from my leapard Mare next year.
If not might just keep a colt and geld, with our name for showing our bloodline.
This way I have my name on what I am showing... finally.... So in total I should end up with 5-6 mares for my breeding program and that is what is right for us.
Hope my Dreams do come true... We have 2 fillies so far to grow up to make us proud.
We will have to see what happens next year. but never say never...
