a friend maiden mare foaled out at 312 days.. foal will not suckle.. does anyone know how much a foal should take in 1 hour.

thank you

Sometimes they will take longer than that. Has she given an enema that helps them want to look to nurse

Others im sure can give better advise im sure.

Is momma trying on her own or are humans trying to help

Thank you Lori! will pass on

Is the foal trying to nurse and just isn't finding the nipple or can't/won't latch on? Or is he not really looking?

hello, colt wont latch on , mare has milk, foal will suckle from fingers only.

Try to get foal pointed in the right direction near udders and lightly scratch his butt as mom would do careful not to push him off balance

trying to push him towards udder will make him back off

Keep us posted please

once foal has good energy from a good drink

hopefully he can continue with energy looking for more from mom

The pump described by Eagles Ring Farm works wonderfully, but be gentle pulling the milk.

I feed about 6cc's at a time to give a jump start to the foal. How old is the foal? You want it to get about a pint in the first 24 hours.

Update if you can.

PS: Smear colostrum around the mare's teats too..... If you push the foal too much to locate, it will just p*ss him off.

Try some karo syrup on foal's mouth and on mare's teats..sometimes gives him a jump start and some quick energy.

Hello and thank you for all your advice, the colt is still hanging in, weak... mares milk seems to be drying up... (I will ask for more info on this) he is trying but it seems to be the constipation which is bringing him down, perhaps a little dehydrated?? Any more thoughts would be appreciated.

thank you

Kim

Okay...is he being fed supplementary formula if he is not drinking enough from the mare? If not---he needs to be. Goats milk works great!

If he is dehydrated then he needs more milk--or IV fluids now--constipation...more fluids will help, as will an enema...hard to know what to suggest without knowing exactly what is being done for him already.

Thank you... I will find out more information and post later tonight.
