Gov. Kathleen Blanco Refused Bush Aid

Though her state has been devastated by Hurricane Katrina and thousands are believed dead in New Orleans, Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco has refused to allow the federal government to take control of evacuation efforts.

"Shortly before midnight Friday, the Bush administration sent her a proposed legal memorandum asking her to request a federal takeover of the evacuation of New Orleans," the Washington Post reported in Sunday editions.

Gov. Blanco's office rejected the request, the paper said - concerned that such a move would be comparable to a federal declaration of martial law.

The Louisiana Democrat had also failed to use more than a hundred school buses parked near to Superdome to transport stranded citizens who didn't have to means to obey earlier evacuation orders.

After the 17th Street Levee broke on Tuesday, the buses were rendered usless by rising flood waters.

State and federal officials also told the Post that Gov. Blanco did not reach out to a multi-state mutual aid compact for assistance until Wednesday - more than 24 hours after New Orleans descended into chaos.

She should be hung.

Could you please share where you got this? I just did a Google search and turned up absolutely nothing. I used the title "Gov. Kathleen Blanco refused Bush Aid". Did I use the wrong title? I would like to read more about it, find out more details etc, so it would be terrific if you could share the source. Thanks!

It seems there are not many details at this time. It will be interesting to watch this, and other, stories as they unfold. Right now there is so much chaos it is hard to know what is true and what is "spin". I guess only time will tell......

Yes, this is from NewsMax.

Oh yes even that liberal bastion of BS the WA Post buried it in one of their articles. I hate reading main stream papers it's too much work sometimes. Of course, like always they leave out the pertinent parts.

And if it hasn't already hit news elsewhere, you are all going to learn soon that local NO government bought a casino, a marina, a private airplane and lined their cronies pockets with the money the Feds gave them to strenghten and upgrade the levies. You can bet heads are going to roll after the people of LA regain their footing.

Sorry but who gives a dang whose fault it is. The damage is done, so now its time to focus makeing it better and getting everybody possible out of there. Now is not the time to be pointing fingers, there is much more important stuff to do.

Ashley,

I totally agree with you. However, the news media is making this a finger pointing game (real surprise there.)

Personally I like to know the whys of things in the hopes of it not happening again.

Edited to add: The old saying stands true. THose who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it!!

Although it is sad to tell, this is true. Blanco needs to realize she is hurting more people every day. She is not able to handle a disaster of this magnatude and should let the Feds take over.

That is exactly what she is doing. Only now she wants to know why they did not force her to let them take over from the beginning. As I said all the finger pointing is making us sick over it. We are proud to be U.S. Citizens and fly the U.S. flag next to the Canadian flag. Now our neighbors want to know if we are still proud to be "Yankees".

I want to add a comment! All elected officials are to blame. Gov. Mayor, and Pres. Bush.

Right now the Bush admin. Is at the top of my list. We were negelected form the get go. Do you all know that Red Cross, Fema didn't respond until days later. Just here in my parish two days age we saw the first sign of these agency's. Local Churches did more than they ever did and these churches are still doing a lot.

Why did it take days for them to respond Who will know. I do know that they let ever one down here in the South. From Louisiana, Missi, Ala.

Areas are still not rec. aid.

My family was turned down when they went down to the city with air boats to help. Reasons, on one to tell they where to go to help. No one knew what to do.

Slow to respond but fast to help others.

Funny how over seas now releases oil to help.

I really think Bush have done something a long time ago. He is an oil business man after all.

Thanks for letting me state that. If any one would like to know more let me know.

..Is it because people don't know their basic government classes that were taught in school? The States Have to ask for Government help...It is Only the states that can get emergency help from our Goverment..This is in the Constitution it is called States Rights... It starts with that States then moves to the Federal Goverment... Bush had declared LA. a disaster area, but the Governor of that State said we are not ready for you all to come in.. This is Basic Government 101... Wow Or another way to put this the Federal Government Cannot BY the Constitution of the USA go into any State until it is declared a National emergency AND and that is the important part of this, And the Governing Bodies of that State, says, Yes Come on in...And that did not happen according to many reports now...The Governor and or State Officials have to Ask for help...And this is what protects us the 50 States from any Federal Officials from Just coming in...It is a States Rights and Constitution issue here...Regarless of the Emergency~! Sorry but that is the hard truth and I know it is not going to help the 10,000+ that have died needlesscy..But that is the whole truth behind this very very tragic and devastating affair....

Sadly, most americans do not know how the government works.

May I enlighten here. Gov & Mayor did ask for help as well as all neighboring parishes and states. For what ever reason fema and other agency's was very slow to respond. It should not have taken days for help period. People died unnecessarily. Our Governor was in the wrong the Mayor tried and did issue a mandatory evac. The poor, elderly, sick could not or had the means to evcuate. As you all can see the is no place for all these people to to go.

Getting out was not easy it took hours just to make a mile on the route out. Yes a lot needs to be done. They had many years to prepare.

I personally think the city does not need to re build. It will happen again.

It is so far below sea level. It just doesn't make any good sence.
