I have good news and bad news. First the good......the donkey I bought hoping he'd breed my mares is "in love" with only one mare...a pretty gray arab type girl. She's coming into foal heat and he's actually hee hawed and climbed up as if he was going to do the deed! A first...he hasn't looked at another mare.

The bad news.....he'll only try first thing in the morning....but when he does get on her all he does is kind of ...lay there.....ummm...there is NO action going on. I KNOW this guy has bred donkey mares so he knows how to do it but except for pretending he's going to breed her, he does nothing! The mare will stand....but after the second or third time he climbs up and takes a nap she's had enough and wants to kick...I haven't let her but she wants to! In the meantime, she's horsing for the stallion at the fenceline half the day so I know she wants to be bred!

Ok......help?!!! Does he need viagra or what?!!!!

When I first got my jack, he was with 2 sorrel 30" mini mares. He was not interested in the least. I know they were in heat, cause I could see the "signs".

I then purchased 2 mini jenneys, and it took about a month for them to "get along", then he knew what love was all about

I since had mini mares in with all 3 donkeys and the always seem to just ignore each other. Seems like they are "breed specific"....only liking their kind.

Hi,

Try this:

My jack will sometimes get too excited and try to mount too soon. You have to have a LOT patience with these guys.

What I do is tie the mare up to the same place everytime you are going to try and breed her. Bring the jack out and let him "talk" to her but don't let him go up until

EVERYTHING is ready. You may have to pull him back and let him think about it for a while.

I let Kilroy smell her, talk a little, smell her belly, NO BITING. If he tries to go up without dropping, I pull him back and make him think. Once he is finally ready, it goes pretty smooth and the mare doesn't get tired of him laying on her back.

Hi,

Where are you located? My little sptted guy would love to have a new girl friend!

I came home the other day and my gate had been left open and my spotted jack was in with my mini gelding and was running him everywhere trying to mount him - I swear he could run on his two back feet as fast as my gelding was running on four feet on the ground. He had tried so hard to breed my gelding that he had my geldings whole rear end and his sides soaked from @#$%^& - well you know what I talking about. How is that for a ready to breed anything donkey!

I have two mini mares due from him in Sept and Oct. can not wait to see them.

I am going to have my mini mare bred in August by a mini jack also. But when I had my quarter mare bred the guy would do what was posted earlier tie my mare up in the same place, let Jake talk to her, sniff her, nuzzler her, then he would drop and if he was not ready and Jake went to mount he would tap on his lead and tell him not yet, and he would Fully get ready then he would say OK Go On and he would do his thing and when he was done he would come off of her.........if he missed her he would go thru the process all over again and once he completed it the guy would put the lead over his neck and tell him to go to his stall and Jake went to his stall and I would go walk my mare..............

He was a awesome jack, I had never met a more gentler jack then to be as big as he was and he was a mammoth....but I am so looking forward to having my little mare bred and getting a tiny bundle of joy for next year. She is a red and white paint and sweet as can be..........

Has anyone ever bred a paint to a grey jack and come out with a colored baby or do they normally throw gray babies?

Well, we breed a chocolate jack, Kilroy to a pinto and got a spotted mule. It was a total accidental breeding but this year we did it on purpose

BUT genetics and color planning go right out the window when dealing with hybrids.

This is Kilroy

Hi All, I do the same thing as minimule does...I wont let him do "his thing" until I have him teased a little..and then he is definitely ready! My hinny is alot like yours, Driving4Fun, ,he will chase my stallions around and try his darnest....poor fellow, I think hes going to take it kinda hard, when I break the news to him that hes not fertile and is going to get the "crunch..snip..snip"! Dont think he will be a happy camper. I also think color genetics get thrown out the window, when dealing with donkeys. Corinne

My 2 yr old mule, snipped at less than 3 months of age, STILL thinks he is a stud. I have to keep him seperated from the girls. He keeps chasing them around and trying his best to "take care of business".

On the tying the mare and making the jack get ready.......

I use a specific halter for breeding as well. Kilroy knows when he has that halter on and there is a mare at the post, he has a specific job to do. If I put another halter on, he is going to play or drive.

MInimule your baby is absolutley gorgeous............my mouth is watering I can't wait to get a mini mule baby I have wanted one for so long. How tall is your jack and how tall is your mare? My mare is 29-30 inches I believe. I need to remeasure her to be sure. But I don't want to breed to something that is too big for her. Do you have any suggestions on heighth?

In actuallity, Kilroy is about 33" and Cashew is 29" or 30". Sunny was half the size of momma when she was born and the birth was unattended. Sunny was also the first foal to survive on this mare. She lost the first two.

This year's mule, Jester, was HUGE. Momma is 33" but he was 27" still folded up after 12 hours. His body was massive rather than the usually slender body. I did have to help him out. The thing with this one was we bought the mare at an auction so we have no history on her at all. I have no idea what her background is.

Good luck on your foals coming. It is really fun to play with them.

Mine are going to the Bishop Mule Days in Bishop, CA next May. YIPPEEE!!!

I'm also expecting 3 mule foals next spring.

I can't wait to have her bred next month. And good Lord willing and the creek don't rise she will settle with a baby and have a nice healthy mule baby next summer. I wish I could go and experience Bishop Mule Days. But I am afraid that is a little far for us to travel right now...........I did make it to Columbia Tennessee for Mule Days and plan on going back next year...........I was amazed............and excited about next year..........
