I woke up to 8 degrees this morning. This is just plain uncalled for and I do not care to participate.

I knew it was going to be cold but nobody said anything about any single digets up here on the mountain. Of course if they did, I wasn't listening because I've been very busy holidays being what they are and all. So I went out to feed dressed up better than Nanook of the North, and my face was frozen after walking just 5 feet out the door. The barn doors were frozen shut and I couldn't get in. Not a problem, I have de-icer. Ok that's a problem because its inside my truck which is also frozen shut. I scram back to the house to see if there is any de-icer somewhere in the back cabinets of the mud room to find out I'm locked outside. Yup, the back door latch froze shut just that fast and I couldn't get in the house. Nobody's home but the dogs. I finally figured out the front door would be open since Dan's the last one out, so I got in easily that way. Whew! :Cold-Scared :Cold-Scared :Cold-Scared

Found some de-icer spray thank heavens and I sprayed the doors on the sliding door hinge thingy and that helped me get the a-jar just a little, enough to drag my fat rear in there. But the ground was so frozen up that the doors were sagging and dragging on the ground and wouldn't hardly slide. I get inside and low and behold had to praise the hus at times like this for insullating the barn. It was a whopping 34 degrees in there, felt like the Bahamas after being outside.

All the minis were fine, jumping for joy because they knew breakfast was on the way. But Sonny, my 25 year old Florida bred quarter horse was a mess. He doesn't grow much hair, never does, and managed to compeltely destroy his Big D blanket. He wrecked it last year and I spent a good while on repairs only to have him completely demolish it last night. He was cold, shivvering, so I fixed him a warm beet pulp, shoved hay in front of him, dumped 4 bales of shavings in his stall in addition to the ones I had in there, went digging for his stable sheets and double upped on them while I tried to mend his blanket fast with the help of duck tape and hay string and two way clips. Once he started eating he was fine, just grumpy.

So here I am on the internet 3 days before Christmas searching for warm blankets in a size 80. Not a good time to be desperate. Has to be cut back at the wither, scoop neck in the front, wide closed front, for the bulldozer chest, wide belly band, burgandy all in a size 80. That was a joke because there were slim pickins out there. Not sure what I ended up ordering, but I know it didn't fit all my criteria. I just knew I needed it right now and as long as it was an 80, I took it. Man, I hope I didn't order pink by accident.

The two mares (Holly and Angel) in the run in outside had their water frozen and by the time I filled up another bucket and brought it out to them, it was already freezing over on top within minutes so I said heck with this and brought them in the isleway so they could have their breakfast and some water and hay in there while I managed to do a nice grooming on them. What a couple of ungrateful dummies. Soon as I attemped to leave and shut the barn doors, both mares began to pitch a fit and want back outside in the run in. I insisted they stay put for now because I was worried if they hadn't had enough water to drink they would colic and die. They could relax in the barn, be nice and cleaned up and presentable, eat, drink, and be merry; so I thought. :arg!

I left the barn to go wash dishes and do some laundry, and returned in an hour to find the isleway re-arranged and decorated, horsey style. They drug some of the santa stockings down off the stalls, mashed them to pieces, knocked over my chairs, drug a roll of ribbon all over the place, pooped and peed everywhere in the isle, and tore open a bale of shavings. Didn't realize that one of them, not sure if it was Holly or Angel had succeeded in letting Merry Beth out of her stall and Merry Beth was was in heat, trying to get a free unscheduled breeding, by Dick or Nick, she didn't care who I guess. Meanwhile, Sonny was bashing his door down, bent the hinges on it and knocked a top board down, because Holly was standing in front of it making faces at him and tormenting him. Had to drag out the power tools to fix that. Needless to say, Merry Beth went back into her stall, and Holly and Angel were escorted quickly back out to their run in where I happily catered to their water all day long.

Try and stay warm Marty.

Thankfully no wind this am but when we came in from the barn this morning after doing chores we had 10 below. It was a bit cool but we had no mosquitos!

Marty

You made my morning. That is the weather I complain about on here all the time from Oct to April. That is why we are looking to relocate. That is why as I age my chores get later every morning this morning below zero and got 15 inches of snow yesterday. Fortunately hubby did break a hole to the barn but I am concerned as the snow on barn roof hasnt slid yet and we are getting a mix tomorrow of rain and snow. Rain on 15 inches of snow isnt good makes it heavy and roofs in danger of collapse so someone will have to go up before day is over and shovel someof it or we will have water in the kitchen. So sorry you are experiencing some of what we have but you did make me laugh this morning Thank you.

Nita

But the summer before i moved here to OK the temps hit over 115 so south dakota and north go from one extreme to the other

I learned one thing when i lived up there in the winter it gets past -30 you cant tell the difference anymore

Well for several days its been -30 ish with wind chill here. I do the feeding by myself as the pregnante lady cant do much. I do get help when I have to water but thats it.

Its taken extra long lately because some certian stallion seems to keep find a way out of his pen and in with everybody else. HE has done fine with the boys but I am not certian the girls are bred so he cant stay with them.

I would take your 8 degrees any day!!! IT was so cold yesterday the school ski trip was cancelled and the dogs look at me like "you want me to go out there???

While talking to my friend in Ky. yesterday, I told her it had gotten down to 19 here night before last and it was cold! First time since we re located to Texas that we have had to break water! She told me to shut up and picture 5 degrees at her place yesterday morning, with everything frozen solid, and the wind howling.

It was cold all day yesterday, with temps sitting on 32, but warmed up some all night long. This is just the coldest we have been since we've been here, but it is supposed to be back in the 60's by Christmas day.

8 degrees?? Marty, i wish it was 8 degrees here the past few days !!! Don't even get me started on wind chill...

Oh Marty I feel for ya... I woke up to the same temp. We are getting freezing rain in some areas right now. I'm also, not much on the extreme cold... I can't imagine the -30's that were mentioned. No way! My husband set up heated buckets for us. I feel very blessed to have them.

Kim

(Nodding) I can relate to 8 degrees......and COLDER here........As I quote you on the next line......

"I didn't get anything done today I was supposed to do and I'm worn out."

Totally relate to that too!

When Mother Nature decides to throw a cold one I just decide to go into "survival mode"........and I hate it!

At the moment we have three hoses spread out in our house.....from the kitchen, through the diningroom, into the livingroom to thaw. Yes, we had drained them. But in the single digit temps, the water was freezing before it got to the water troughs! So we ended up hauling buckets to top up three 100 gallon troughs.

My very Roman Catholic religious husband was trudging through the snow yesterday with sloshing buckets in each hand and voicing some not so nice things........I was trudging and sloshing too, but keeping my mouth shut.

And if anyone says they LOVE winter? They're getting a big fat cold pile of icy snow in their face and down their backs!

Yes, Marty.........I can relate..........(and I can share some other stories too.......so don't get me started.)

I'm with you JourneysEnd- we were about the same yesterday! (45) And some p.m. rain to boot. Supposed to rain on Xmas day too.

Hey, mid 40's probably sounds pretty balmy to some right now, but when you consider that is a 65 degree drop from our summer 110, that is pretty dang cold. Us desert rats have thin blood! :Cold-Scared

That's just great- that is probably why my sister has not texted me to let me know they got to her son's house ok in TN today. She is probably frozen!!! They drove all the way from CA to there for the holiday.

I dont know how you all do it! (It does get below freezing here at night during the winter sometimes... does that count?)

I love your picture of Sonny - assume that's him in the blanket:)

We haven't had 8 degrees, thank goodness, but we had a night in the low 20's which is cold enough to get me running buckets of hot water out to the water troughs. I think all this just wears you out because you end up wearing 20 pounds of clothes to stay warm LOL!

Oh Marty.....I know it wasn't fun at the time......but your stories always put a grin on my face!!!!

Marty,

Funny story.

I only wish that we could get an unusual 8 degrees. Winter has just started and we have had over 15 " of snow and several days of below zero temperatures, with windchill factors of -30.

I HATE THE COLD!!! I also live in the wrong state. But I am stuck here as my daughter and her 3 boys live here.

I am dreading to see what January is going to bring. I at least get to go to Florida for 10 days after Christmas. Problem is, it is north Florida, so it can get quite chilly there too.

Anyway, have a Merry Christmas and keep warm.
