Do AMHA and or AMHR drug test. Come to think of it I am almost positive R doesnt as I havent paid a drug test fee at any shows. Dont show A so cant say if they do or not. And if they dont WHY?????

I don't believe either do, and it bugs me. Comming form big guys we DT at ALL our shows, but Esp our big ones... It would help for when hooves are taken down way to low for measuring and then giving 'em something to make them sound and other cases along those lines.. or steroids, or accelerantes.. etc etc.

I would vote for that one!!

AMHA randomely drug tests at worlds. For instance they say the 8th place horse will be drug tested in this class or classes.

The National Grand Champions (and I think Reserve?) are drug tested at Worlds, plus randomly selected horses.

AMHA also created a new drug testing committee last year and they are working on a new drug testing policy.

I don't know their policy now but, do know that in mid ninety's when we were showing heavy, the Gr & Res Gr , as well as National & Res National champs were tested. You were escorted from the ring by a vet assistant and taken to the "collection" area where they waited for them to urinate.

When we showed in CA (AMHR) there were State drug testers at all the Pacific Coast shows and many of the Gold Coast shows, plus at Regionals. Are they not doing that anymore? We made many trips to that "special" pile of shavings...

I asked casue I was working with my vet this weekend at a big show here doing drug testing (large horses) and then thought hmm it has been forever since or maybe never i saw drug testing with the minis although we did do it with the hunters.

The places we picked were very random and picked before the show started, was umm an interesting day all the way around for sure got to meet lots of nice people as i followed them around waiting for the horse to go , or watched them as they continued to show in there classes and hoped the horse didnt pee in the ring how embarassing would that be to have to run into the arena with a collection cup

thank goodness everyone waited till we made it back to the stalls

We had a yearling drug tested in 2004 at an AMHA show in California.

I was wondering why he chose this very passive yearling (placed 5th in his class), to drug test and he said it was a random selection he just picked one he saw walking by.

The man taking the test randomly picked a horse or two at every show - he said it was a requirement. I felt bad for him as he had to sit in the stall of the horse he'd chosen until it pee'd! I had to sign that the horse had been tested with his full name.

He thought it was a bit lame for a local show with minis as it was unlikely to be drugged to mask pain or make it 'hot', but did say it was a law at all shows. I think CA does charge a drug fee of $3 or 5 per horse at every show. I'd have to check a show premium to find out for sure.

Bess is quite right-and back then, a witness was also required. I got 'drafted' to be just that - Landrys Cowboy Del won a driving class, was unhooked and taken immediately to a stall, deeply bedded in shavings for the purpose, that was near the entrance to the Justin. As witness, I, along with the horse's handler and the testing official, were REQUIRED to remain right there with the horse until he "performed"--thank goodness, most horses think a deeply bedded stall IS the bathroom, and it didn't take long before the cup could be held underneath him!

Back then, it was the policy to test ALL top winners, I believe.
