My 5 month old colt got caught in a hog panel type fence this morning. He got his head and two front legs through the holes. He could have been like this for several hours. We found him around 8:00 this morning. He was covered in sweat and when we got his head out it appeared he had broken his neck. We got the vet out and she said he was just very very sore and stressed out. She gave him batamine (?) and told us to massage his legs and neck and let him rest. He did rest for a long time and he is now able to get up and eats. But when he poops he strains quite a bit and his pee is blood red. The vet says it is probably just the trauma he went through. Any thoughts or suggestions. I'm afraid he is not out of the woods yet. Thanks for any info and prayers.

I am so sorry to hear about your colt. I hope he will be OK, but I would definately be seeking a second opinion. I am not a vet, and don;t know alot, but I cannot see how any amount of stress can cause blood to be in the urine, especially to the point where it is turning it blood red! Something is majorly wrong, i would think. Are you 100% sure it is blood? Not just a wierd dark colored urine? Get another opinion! Good Luck!

I agree, Call a different vet! Collect a sample and show the Vet. I dont know how stress could cause him to pee blood.

Hope he is ok!

I can only suggest what I would do if this were my colt.

I would not bother with that vet again. I would have him in a hospital immediately with a very good staff of vets since the blood can indicate internal injuries. I am very sorry to hear about this accident. Best wishes to you and for your colt.

I agree with Marty....Not to scare you but, if you are sure it is blood in his urine get another opinion. And I would keep a very close eye on him until you can. Sleeping TOO much is a sign of internal bleeding and if he gets weak... Good Luck and keep us posted on him...Theresa

Edited to add... You said you found him at 8 this am....Has he been peeing red urine or blood since then? Or has he just started to do this? No specific reason for asking, just curious.....

I hope he is alright!! It is so scary to think what these babies can get themselves into.

How awful for your poor baby. Dark colored urine can be caused by the breakdown of muscle tissue, which can occur in situations like this--due to stress/trauma/over exertion. However, that is dark urine. If his is blood red, as in bright red, I'd have fears that it is actually blood in the urine, which may very well indicate internal injury.

A friend's horse (big horse) got away with his saddle on & got caught in the brush & she believes he got his foot caught in a stirrup...he fought free & came home but had hurt his hind leg badly and as it turned out did also have internal injuries. His outcome was not so good. It's not exactly the same accident, and yet the resulting entrapment would be very similar to what your little fellow endured, and your colt could also have internal injury from his struggles.

How is his gum color? Relatively normal, or pale? Monitor that & I would agree with getting a second opinion, particularly about the red urine. I don't know what can be done if he does have some internal injury, but it's good to know you've done everything possible for him.

I'll sure be praying for the little fellow!

found this on Trauma:

Trauma to the abdomen can lead to internal injuries and bleeding. If the kidneys, bladder or urinary tract are damaged, the dog, cat or other pet may have bloody urine. Treatment and diagnosis varies.

Just thought this might help you decide, on what to do? Hard to find anything on just a horse.

I do know that when our dog got stepped on by our mini horse, he was taken to our vet

She took xrays, nothing broken, but told us to watch for blood in his urine, if this showed up to bring him right back.

Yes, also take temp, and keep eye on his gums for shock, and would not hurt to give him banimine, I would think he is hurting somewhere? even penicillin for a few days.

the Dr. gave our dog penicillin and told us to give him baby aspirn for pain which would help any swelling.

Good thoughts coming your way.

Besides worrying about the blood in his urine, I am concerned over the same thing as Minimor. Damage to muscles can cause dark urine, and it may look like blood. If this is the case, the horse should have IV fluids to help flush the kidneys. He may have been caught and was thrashing around trying to get free.

Let us know how he does, poor baby!

Oh gosh I would get a second opinion also and quickly! Blood in the urine is not good. So sorry this happened, I had one that caught his head in the fence too, but luckily I was there when he did it so cut the fence to get him out without any injuries.

Please keep us informed. The advise given here is good, but I would not give him PCN until another vet has seen him as this will/could mask other problems he may be having. Even banamine could mask his symptoms, so again I would get a second opinion as quickly as possible.

Good luck, poor little fella I bet that was horrifying for him.

So sorry to hear about your little colt. I agree with the second opinion and look forward to an update. Hope all goes well for him.

Wondering how your little guy is doing this morning?

Hope the colt is doing better this morning. I don't have any "words of wisdom" but just sending good thoughts your way.

The episode sounds horrible. You can't be watching all the time.

Just one comment on the urine color. Urine will look very dark especially if he was holding it in or had been in that position and couldn't get any fluids for a while. I've seen young horses "hold it" for an entire trailer trip and they pee bright orange for a while. It's scary but that's what stress and lack of water will do. You need to keep watch and if the color is really from blood, you need to get a vet in.

Wanted to give you an update on the little colt. He peed again last night and not nearly as much blood. I'm thinking it may have just been really dark. He was extremely dehydrated also. Other than that his neck is still bent funny but vet said it could take a while to straighten out. I think we barely found him in time. We got very lucky. Thanks for prayers and advice.

Thanks for the update! His still being alive is a wonderful sign! And yes, if he was dehydrated, that surely would have given him dark urine! Hope he is on his way to a full recovery now!

Poor little guy

If he were mine, I would want an X-ray on his neck and maybe even his spine. It being kinked isn't good IMO. At the least it may be "out" and need to be put back in place. If his bones need adjusting you don't want them to calcify (spelling) in that position.

I hope he feels better soon! You're doing a great job taking care of him

I wonder if a massage might help his neck.

Are there horsie chiropractors or reiki specialists nearby?

If it was me, I would likely be trying some hot and cold packs alternated on his stiff neck....I don't think it would hurt him.

Glad he is doing a bit better anyway. Good luck, you were lucky to find him.
