Dam was apparently chestnut max sabino, sire was maximum black splash overo

Mare looks like she's taken after her dam. Off white but the tips of her (winter) coat are chestnut, and hair around the front of her head is more chestnut. Turns more white in the summer time. However, has mottling around her eyes and her nose. When I clipped her, I discovered her whole body is mottled (skin). Inbetween her back legs are mottled too.

What could've caused this? Without testing, what do you think it could be?

When I first got her (you can see mottling)

I accidently used a blade WAY too short, but you can see her speckled skin

My guess would be there is some appaloosa in the mix, especially with that much mottling on her muzzle, and other places.

I think the sabino is causing the mottling. You can have her tested and know for sure whether or not she carries appy.

Would the pinto genes cause that much mottling, Debby? You know I don't know much about pinto genes, so I'm always ready to learn. But, I didn't know that pinto genes could cause that much mottling, and the skin 'markings'.

By the way, she looks SOOOO much better since you've had her. Definitely, an improvement in weight and condition. Good going, you !!

I am inclined to say there is Appaloosa there--the only sabino I have seen with that much mottling turned out to test positive for the Lp gene. So--Appaloosa and not just sabino.
