UCDavis did a quick turn around on Zoe's color testing.
I have the results back and have to say I'm amazed and
confused at the same time.
As a foal, her AMHA registration was returned to her breeder saying
she was a palomino not a chestunut/sorrel. She is registered as such.
The more I've read on here and other people's comments, over the
years, I was beginning to think she could be a silver bay.
Stacy kindly pulled hairs for me (yes, I'm chicken) Results are below.
I don't know if this photo properly shows what I see in the daylight
as she shows a strong black cast to her coat and also has black hairs
in her mane and tail. She doesn't, however, show the graying on her
legs I associate with silver. Testing came back she is NOT silver.
I'd be interested in hearing your views on what color I should request
her papers be changed too, for the sake of accuracy. According to
the test results she is a redhead but is there a shade of red she could
more accurately be described as? Could the recessive agouti be
giving her the black cast?
Red-Factor Result:
e/e - Only the red factor detected. Basic color is sorrel or chestnut in the absence of other modifying genes.
Agouti Result:
a/a - Only recessive allele detected. Black pigment distributed uniformly. Basic color is black in the absence of other modifying genes.
Cream Result:
N/N - No evidence for the Cream dilution altered sequence detected. Basic color is sorrel or chestnut, bay or black in the absence of other modifying genes.
Silver Result:
N/N - No evidence of the altered sequence detected.
Overo Result:
N/N - No evidence for the altered sequence detected
