Can anyone explain a bit more about color to me. I have a non fading Black horse with just a small star. His registration says his sire is a Blue Roan Appaloosa and his Dam is a Dun. His Grand sire is also a Blue Roan App and his Grandam on his Sire side is Black App. I can't find any other information on his Dam side. I just don't understand how he could be so black.

My way of thinking with the Dun being a dilution gene and having this much app in him it would really bring the percentages down for him to be this black. Hope someone can explain it to me.

Thanks

A blue roan is a black based horse with the roan modifying the color.

Take away the roan gene and you have a black horse.

Dun....what color dun? Chestnut, black, purple, gray? If any other color than chestnut, those horses will also be a black based horse.

That's all I know. Some one with more smarts will come on soon enough.
