Love it, love it, can't say enough great things about it!! As an athsmatic and parent of small children, I'm SO for it!! I don't know about elsewhere, but here in AR it's illegal to smoke in a car that carries children young enough to require the use of a carseat/booster seat!

I wish.

I can't stand cigeratte smoke. Grew up with two smokers as parents and HATED it! Now I can't stand to even go in a restaurant that allows smoking, but in our state they still allow it. One can only pray that it will change and soon. I especially, hate walking into a building through a cloud of smoke......

Maine has not allowed smoking in public places (restaurants, hotels, even bars) for probably 4 years now. I love it.. Once city implemented that you could not smoke in a car with a child and I think i heard the state is jumping on the bandwagon that you cannot smoke in the car with a child under 18 in the vehicle.

Not sure what the "clean air act" is, but here there are very strict smoking laws. There is no smoking in ANY public building (inc. any restaurant, coffee shop, bingo hall, casino or bar) not even any enclosed and seperately ventalated "smoking rooms" (with the exception of long term care facilities and nursing homes, where there may be in and outdoor designated smoking areas) and not even on the venues outdoor patio. There is no smoking in taxis, university campuses, or common areas of shared accomodations (like an appartment lobby, stairwell, or shared common kitchen or bathroom in a rooming house) There is no smoking within 4 meters from any entrance, intake vent or window to a public building or bus stop/shelter/taxi stand, no smoking in a car with anyone 19 and under, and some towns have even chosen to enact total public area bans... no smoking anywhere in public including sidewalks and roadways!

Personally, I LOVE the idea, but enforcement has a LOOOONG way to go to make it effective. I still have to walk past groups of smokers standing crowded outside entrances to restaurants, malls, bus shelters etc...

:DOH!

Edited to add that our act is called the "smoke free places act"

Here in Michigan they haven't banned smoking from public places yet...although many places have done it themselves. Of course there is no smoking within any hospital entrance by a certain number of feet and some even not on their premises anywhere. I was a smoker (just quit a couple months ago) and I have mixed feelings on it. Of course I have no problem with not smoking in public places, restaraunts, stores, etc...

although this sounds alittle ridiculous...I don't think govt. should have the right to control people in that sense.

I will tell you one thing that will bother me way more than smoking...is someone heavily loaded with perfume or cologne...it makes me sneeze, and very difficult to breathe and can actually make me gag...are they going to ban perfume use also? Just something to think about.

You have to watch what you wish for as far as the govt. getting too much in your lives and controlling people.

I do not like the overwhelming smell of cologne or perfume either, can inhaling that be dangerous tho as far as causing cancer and that?

The no smoking will take affect July 1st in Iowa. Personally I don't like the fact that the government can tell a business owner how to run his business. Most restraunts and public buildings are non smoking now. Also there are usually non smoking areas in restraunts and if there aren't then just don't go. In Iowa the casinos are exempt. And why do you think that is? The gov. doesn't want to lose their share of the money thinking that making casinos non smoking revenues will drop. There are also non smoking areas at casinos. I don't like the gov. taking away our rights. That is the main issue I have about the non smoking act. dionne

This is exactly my point...as far as the cancer concern...there are so many fumes in the air from everything we do..your chances of getting cancer from second hand smoke because you past someone on the street is pretty dang slim.

When I smoked I always tried to respect those that didn't, of course not all smokers do. But again to me the bigger picture is the govt telling you what you can and can't do, just not good.

Boinky is correct in Maine it is in all those places she mentioned and the State now says no smoking in a motor vehicle with anyone under 16. My question is this if all the smokers quit smoking and paying cigarette taxes who is going to pay them or should I say who is going to pay for the programs that these taxes support? I also think that the next group targeted will be the obese as there is already talk of that here in Maine that there will be much higher taxes on junk food and other fast food. So do be careful what you wish for the smokers for the most part have just laid down and allowed the gov to tell them whatever and have for the most part abided by the law but where does this gov. control go ?

I'm not a smoker and my dad died of lung cancer so I'm not a fan of smoking BUT the bull headed Bohemian in my dislikes the idea of being told what one can and can not do. It's a slippery slope when the government gets involved "for our good".

We've had strict no smoking laws here for several years now, and it's great--no smoking in public places, not even in the bars or casinos. It's nice to be able to go out to eat and not have to put up with someone else's cigarette smoke, or to go to the bar without reeking of smoke when you come home.

There is a proposal that smoking be banned in vehicles when childen under a certain age are present--I'm not positive but I think that age might be 12? But that one isn't law yet.

In Illinois we have the Smoke-Free Act. It's been great, but they're already talking about passing some retroactive addendums that allow certain businesses to pay a fee and still have indoor smoking. Which to me is very dubious--they outlined a number of health risks to get the act passed, and now if these pass it will essentially be putting a price on people's health. Ridiculous.

To be honest, I haven't heard much bickering from my smoker friends. They don't like to taste their or someone else's smoke while eating either.

It's the law here in Washington, the State....Thank Goodness.

Wish they'd done it years ago, years and years ago.....

I have lung disease, asthma and allergies and it's really a boon.

But I'm with Sonya....if they want to really clean up the air

they could add the people with perfumes/after shaves that

near gag you......may not be cancerous but causes health issues

in those with allergic tendencies. Of which there are more and

more all the time.

My doctor's office has signs for people not to wear perfumes, etc.

to their appointments along with their no smoking signs.

Don't anyone get me wrong, I have no problem with restaraurants, hospitals, etc...banning smoking in and outisde of an establishment. I do think a bar is walking a fine line and suppose there should be smoking/non smoking ones and you can pick...same with a casino. But if you are outside walking down the street and you're not litering I don't want anyone telling me I can smoke or not. That's just a little too much control for me.

And the taxes people pay on smoking is outrageous...it funds alot of programs. They will never totally ban smoking or make it illegal in my opinion...as much as the govt says they want people to quit...they really don't.

We have had no smoking in buildings for at least ten years now. I believe they brought it in around 1997. We recently brought legislation in so that there is no smoking on patios, anywhere on hospital grounds, outside of doorways etc. I love it and can't wait until they bring legislation to ban smoking in cars with minors. Smoking is a disgusting, unhealthy habit and the rest of us shouldn't have to suffer just so they can get their next fix.

I've never smoked, and here in California, we also have the law against smoking in businesses and around entrances. I have mixed feelings on this because it's really nice to not have to eat in a restaurant next to people smoking, and not walking through a cloud of smoke when leaving a business. However, I feel that bars should have a right to chose if they want to allow smoking or not. Seriously, with the drunks, fights and sexual harrassment that goes on in a bar, smoking is the least of your problems.

I also wonder where the government is going to draw the line...stop parents from smoking in their vehicles with minors and before you know it, they'll be telling you that you can't smoke in the privacy of your own home with minors in the house. I have no problem with people smoking on the streets or bus stops. I believe that smokers should have rights too, since smoking isn't illegal. Just as they can try to control where their smoke goes, I can just as easily move to an area where I'm not as affected by it.
