Anyone have any experieince of cataracts in younger horses, .....do they inevitabley go totally blind in the affected eye, is it likely they other eye will be affected sooner or later, do they pass the condition on to any offspring?

Hi Jo...long time no post??

No quick answer I'm afraid, horse will lose all but light and shade in the eye, it is not operable as far as I know and whether or not it spreads depends on why it is there in the first place!!

Same with hereditary, I'm afraid, you need to know the root cause.

I know some breeds of dogs are more prone to it, so that would hint at it being hereditary, but it is not, or does not appear to be, so in Humans.

I can only speak from one experiance. I bought a mare about 8 yrs old with a cataract in one eye. At the time you could just barely see the eye was abnormal. Over the years it grew, she lost sight and eventually the eye collapsed. The other eye has not been affected, she is a teenager now.
