I am new at manipulating cycles on mares. A client begged me to breed her mare to my stallion. She was shipped here, I waited and waited, no heat. Had her palpated and ultrasounded. Vet said if she didn't come into heat by last thursday to give her the pg shot. I gave it last thursday. She came into a raging heat on sunday and still is(its friday)

Will she stay in heat longer? She has been bred every day since sunday.

Is the heat different when they get the shots? Longer? stronger?

Prostaglandin, when given at the right time, starts them into a normal heat cycle. When it's given at the wrong time it doesn't do anything, or if they already have a developing follicle, may cause them to ovulate in a hurry. Likely, this is just normal for this particular mare. It is also getting later in the year, and their cycles do get a little wonky as they start to go into diestrus for winter.
