I am extremely interested in learning how to drive a mini in cart. Out of the blue, someone asked if I'd like to trade a mare for the following:

"Would you consider trading a pony cart and harness that fits ponies up to 13hh, its worth $1000?"

QUESTIONS FOR DRIVING EXPERTS:

1. Can a 35" mini drive well in a cart that will accommodate a horse that size?

2. Do harnesses have enough adjustment capability?

I've asked the folks to e-mail a photos of the cart, as it's a 2 hour driving distance between us. With the price of gas, I'd like to do as much "homework" as possible before going any further.

Thanks for your help!

I have a 35.50 mini and he drives in a miniature EE cart. His harness is a B size. I would say no. If you look there is another thread about carts and the shaft length. My cart shaft length is 46 inches. My husband made the EE cart and we customized it for our mini.

I would try to find someone local that does driving whether minis or big horses and take some lessons, or even go to a driving event if there are any in your area and see what it is all about.

My breaking cart is made to take ponies up to 12hh. I can use it to train any size animal, just about, that I want to, and it even stretched to fit Oliver who was 12.2hh, BUT I doubt very much that a 13hh cart would fit a Mini for anything except very basic training- and of course, being actually built as a "breaking cart" the seat is fully movable to balance.

You AND your mini will be unhappy with a cart and harness for that size pony.

Thanks so much for your advice....I think we'll pass on this offer. It's probably better to have the harness/cart "fitted" properly. Clearly, I have a lot to learn and better get cracking some "driving" books.

Appreciate your time!

Cindy
