    Counter shading

She doesn't look black to me. True black horses are exactly that, black, with no shading and they don't bleach in summer. I'm not sure what colour to call your mare but I wouldn't have thought she was black from the photos. I'm sure someone else who is more expert in colours will have an answer!

Difference in Minis compared to Large horses

I have noticed this too with my mini - she handles the very hot weather here with no drama and is happy and keen to work even when I'm about to pass out. My big gelding hides under the trees and sweats just standing in his yard, let alone trying to work him. Absolutely! And it grows so fast...

    Aborting Mare

I'll keep my fingers crossed for her! I'm not sure what you mean by RH, I'm guessing that it is a virus. We don't have a lot of viral problems here in Australia apart from Equine Influenza and the Herpes virus, both of which can be vaccinated for (although the area I live in, we are not yet...

    Neck problem (I think)

Aww Leia, Chilli is giving you the evil eye! She does actually only get about two or three carrots sliced up. I have always fed my horses carrots as part of their feeds since we have no grazing at all here and apart from thistles that I pick for them, carrots are the only fresh feed they get...

    Stallions and Calming Supplements

Hey that's very interesting about hops - I didn't know that so thanks! One thing we do here when we wean the bubs is have a radio playing, it seems to settle them. They prefer the cricket, I think because it is the voices, so the reading out loud idea might work the same way. Personally, in...

    Our first Christmas Parade!

Aww, thanks guys! I am really amazed at the response she has received in my town but I guess I shouldn't be surprised - she won my heart the first second I saw her and she delights me everyday. I just ran outside to pop her top rug on as I heard it start raining. I must have looked like a...

    Aborting Mare

I would agree with ionafarm, the mare may have an infection or be pooling fluid in her uterus. We had this happen with one of our older mares due to her age and getting a bit "saggy" in the middle. The vet said we could have her flushed and a drain inserted but we decided just to treat the...

    Neck problem (I think)

It is supposed to be fed daily, my mare gets 10 grams a day at the moment. It does say in the product info that it is not suitable for giving in "one off" doses.

    Neck problem (I think)

Okay, well I didn't know that. The instructions on the tub say,"Founderguard will only give protection against laminitis resulting from the rapid fermentation of carbohydrates such as starch or sugars in the gastrointestinal tract.... it's use to protect ponies from laminitis caused by grazing...

    Our first Christmas Parade!

Thanks everyone! I was so proud of Chilli and I hope she is a good ambassador for the breed too. Now everytime I go into town people are asking about her and I seem to have become "the lady with the pony". I'm going to have a try to load some pics.... Phew! It worked!

    Neck problem (I think)

Thanks Target's Mom. The Founderguard is a granulated feed supplement with the active ingredient being something called virginiamycin and it is supposed to reduce the riskof laminitis by reducing the lactic acid production in the stomach during digestion. It does say on the tub that it hasn't...

    Our first Christmas Parade!

Last night Chilli and I went in our local Christmas Parade. I was very nervous as this was the first real test of all the training we have done and I hoped everything would go well. I left work early (thanks boss!) and Chilli had a quick bath as she was, predictably filthy when I got home...

What do you consider COSMETIC surgery?

I must be living under a rock because I have never heard of anyone having their horse's ears trimmed surgically and what on earth is "wiring"? I can't imagine doing anything like that to one of my horses just for a show ribbon or a sale. Even the best horses have "something" you have to...

    Neck problem (I think)

darn, so from what you are all saying she might not ever get a nice normal topline on her neck because of the damage done by being fat. That's so disappointing and it makes me cranky when it's something that could have been prevented (I know, get off the soapbox now). I have pulled her mane...

    Neck problem (I think)

Hi all - I'd love some advice as I have my first mini and I am worried about her neck since she has lost weight. She had foundered when I bought her and since then she has lost nearly 30kg. She looks MUCH better overall with her new strict diet and exercise but her neck, which was really hard...

Mini horse stories that would shock disbelievers

This is such a lovely thread! I have two little stories: My three year old warmblood absolutely loves having a bath and especially loves having his mouth washed out with the hose. Of course however long I do it for is never enough. One day i finished hosing him off and went into the tack...

    AI Question

Okay, thanks everyone and I will check out those links. I guess having bred warmbloods I am used to the cost involved but I have found that in most cases, with my good mums, the cost can work out cheaper than sending them interstate and having to pay shipping, agistment etc... Plus I then had...

    AI Question

Since buying my first mini I have spent a lot of time looking at different websites and gathering information and particularly, looking at studs all over the world and the different types of ponies being bred. I have been surprised that none of the sites I have visited so far mention AI as an...

difference between mini horses and pony?

Hooray - well at least there are two of us I've found actually that my friends who all have big horses were freaked when I bought Chilli, thinking she was going to be like the little fine ones, then when they saw her they were thrilled as she is real pony-like, just very little. Everyone...
