My foal is sick, need advice

We gave her some banamine. We don't have any penicillian. Hubby is calling around to friends to see if anyone has any. We only have one vet in this area and he refuses to come out unless it is a "true" emergency, his words. He hates miniatures too so he won't do a lot for them. I wish we...

My foal is sick, need advice

My foal is running a fever, 104.3 last night and now 104.1 this morning. She won't eat her grain and is grazing a little. I checked her gums and she isn't dehydrated. Of course, the vet can't be reached today. Should I give her some bute? She doesn't seem to be in pain, just very listless.

    More questions on new baby

When can I introduce my mare and her new filly back into the herd? She runs with 2 mares, a 2 year old and a yearling. Also, when do I begin to offer the baby grain? She is already trying to eat her mom's grain. She was born on April 2nd.

    Cleaning new foal

My new filly is about 12 days old. She had a case of diarrhea due to the mare's foal heat. Baby is fine, playing not weak, etc. She is just a mess from the diarrhea. On the back of the legs, tail, etc. What is the best way to clean her up? I tried just water but it's not coming off. I...

We went to our first show and won some ribbons.

I took my yearling filly to her first show and she won a few ribbons. We had a great time. I would love to start displaying our ribbons in our barn so our boarders, etc. can see them. I'm afraid they will get dirty though. Does anyone display their ribbons in their barn??

    We had our first baby!

We had our first baby, born on April 2nd at 10:45 p.m. Easy birth and it was a palamino filly! Now I'm wondering how we should proceed? Please let me know what you do with your new babies. Here are a few questions I have: When do you first halter baby? Start teaching her to lead? When do...

Showing my yearling in her and my first show!

I will be showing her in halter classes only. She is a yearling with a lot of "show" attitude. I have been working on setting her up. She is doing "okay" but she doesn't like to stand for long? I guess this is due to her young age? Am I allowed to reach down and set her legs in the halter...

Where did you purchase your show clothes?

I will be wearing nice black jeans, black boots, but I need a shirt and/or jacket. Would like something black with may a little color in it. Does anyone have any good websites from when you purchased your show clothes?

    Teach your yearling to "set"

How do you teach your yearling to stand square? I can get my mare to stand if I move her feet for her but as soon as I try to get her to stretch out for the bait she moves forward!

    My first show

I will be showing AMHR. I will probably stick with the "Halter" classes since it is the first show for both of us.

AMHA or AMHR Registered, or both?

When looking to purchase a horse, what registry do you look for the horse to be registered with? I tend to look for horse that are dual registered.

How tall can the stud be?

When picking a stud to breed to my mare, does the stud have to be smaller than the mare? I have been told that if I breed a 36" stud to my 32" mare that the foal could get too big for the mare to birth? Any truth to this?

    Time for vaccines!

Jeffers does offer West Nile. For some reason, you have to call and order. They won't do it over the internet and they don't have it in their catalogs. I just ordered it from them.

    Working in the roundpen

I have had large horses for a while and have always worked them in a roundpen. I have a 60 foot round pen. I use a lunge whip to drive them forward, etc. I have started working my 1st mini in the roundpen and it's a whole other ball game. She doesn't care about the lunge whip at all. All...

    Mare Stare

If you use Mare Stare, do you like it? I read on their website it cost $200 per year or $20 per month. Do you have to commit to a year and can you pay for only the months you need it?

    Question about foaliing

Do you keep the mare in her stall 24/7 once she is close to foaling? I had planned on keeping her in only at night but now am thinking "What if she foals during the day, in the pasture?"

How many of you use a foaling alarm?

I only have one mare foaling this year. I have put a foaling camera in her stall. She is due Feb. 23rd. I was looking at foaling alarms and boy are they expensive! I'm thinking of not buying one this year but, of course, that worries me. Do you think I would be okay if I checked on her...
