    Edelweiss Training Journal

Oh they have a few extra pounds but I like them that way coming out of winter before clipping. They are turned out after they are worked so usually from around 12-2 until 9 or 10 at night. Just typical high metabolism Shetlands. Most of the B minis get 4-5lbs of grain, alfalfa and hay as well...

Only one in those photos, the one on the bottom, Fonzie. The other two of mine, not pictured, are my red Pinto gelding Amigo, and Tomas the jumper. He doesn't drive. I may have one or two more geldings coming soon. He is! Not sure when, have to find out about the move first. But I'm...

    Edelweiss Training Journal

I've been too busy to update for awhile but there is plenty of progress happening! All but two of my breeding horses are sold but that does not mean there are fewer horses here! Between the consignment program and training, my waitlist is about two months out and I have 11 stalls. Only 3 are...

How are you getting your show ring shine?

A good shine starts with a good feeding program, appropriate fat, protein, vitamin and mineral content. Beyond that, I have done the hot oil treatment. I believe the main purpose is to bring color back after clipping and it definitely worked for that! Mainly used it before Nationals. And yes it...

    Edelweiss Training Journal

So far so good! I do keep it to a manageable number. Although sometimes I wish I had someone to come drive so they could get seasoning on driving in company. I cannot believe how far this boy has come! This is little Richard. Fonzie got a custom comfyfit bridle and loves it. Wonderful day...

    Edelweiss Training Journal

I forgot to update this! Very shortly after the last post was written, Little Richard found the perfect new driver! He is going to be a trail and carriage horse with possibly some CT's as well. He is also staying here to continue training for at least another month. He has become such a solid...

    Auditing Driving Clinic

Late January to mid February at Grand Oaks is the best! You get the full CDE, Grand Oaks Classic, 4 in Hand Club learning day, (not just for 4 in Hand,) and their driving meet, the Boyd Exell clinic and this year they had a CIAT in there too! You will enjoy it! There will be all levels of...

    Auditing Driving Clinic

First of all, congratulations!! You are going to learn so much from the best driver in the world. I went to his clinic there last year and will be hopefully going again to the one next month. Bring a notebook. You will want to take lots of notes as there will be a lot of information! Last year...

    Driving help!

My best advice would be to find a trainer, mentor or helpful experienced driver. I know there is quite a driving community in North Carolina. Find someone who can help you either with in person or virtual lessons, but it sounds like hands on will be the most help. It can benefit both of you!

    Showing 2024

I hope to do a few shows! The halter horses are starting light work and ground manners, the drivers are coming along and they are all getting more work days per week. Sweats will start as soon as the weather allows! 2024 Driving Show Horses

Favourite crosses? What bloodlines do you love the combination of?

It sounds like you are looking for halter style and the good mind for an all around horse. There are quite a few lines that have that. The good mind part is what makes it a little more intricate. That's not the kind of thing you can see on paper, but learn by talking to others and dealing with...

Favourite crosses? What bloodlines do you love the combination of?

Well I would say that first comes deciding what style you want. Each line has different attributes. For example, while some Nighthawks and Billy Idols are very nice I will never have one because of their tendency for low set necks which I do not want for driving. So, are you wanting mainly...

    What clippers do you use??

Same here. My old Andis are still going fairly strong but I'm looking for a new brand that is not Andis as the people I've recommended them to in the past year or two have found them nearly useless. My Andis are from 2020 and still going even though I haven't even done any maintenance to them...

    Edelweiss Training Journal

To be perfectly honest, there were times at first when I thought it would be 6 months before he would drive! I don't say that often either. He is definitely one who a hasty approach would have ruined or at least set back for more time. Thank you. Yes taking a little extra time never hurts! And...

    Edelweiss Training Journal

I hope everyone in the path of this winter storm is staying warm! While everyone is tucked into their stalls with blankets and warm mash, I thought I'd write about two driving horses and how two very different approaches resulted in success with each one. This will be the story of the first...

    Edelweiss Training Journal

Hopefully this link works! I finally started an official training page on Facebook. These are the client horses that I started in driving in 2023. Looking forward to seeing what I get to work with in 2024!

Anyone expecting a foal for 2024?

April or May I believe. I don't have the dates on my calendar yet lol, but they all have due dates.
