    What is causing Diarrhea?

I did recently change their hay. I started buying round bales instead of square bales (coastal hay). I was doing my best to weigh their hay so that I wasn't overfeeding (or underfeeding). I would say that they are slightly overweight. A lot of the things you all are saying makes sense....I just...

    What is causing Diarrhea?

Hello everyone! I am needing a little advise. I have 6 mini horses and recently 2 of them started having diarrhea. This has been going on over a week. I immediately wormed them since it was time anyway and started them both on Probios probiotic chews 1x daily. There has been no improvement. Any...

    Bolting food

Mine were about that size across, but not flat. When he scooted them and they made noise in the bowl it spooked him, then he was afraid to put his head back in the bowl. Maybe I could get a rubber tub and they wouldn't make noise as they are pushed around.

    Bolting food

The vet did suggest adding some water to it which I have been, but maybe I could add a little more to get it "soupy". He still scarfs it down! I've been putting a little scoop at a time in the bowl to slow him down but I would rather not spoon feed him permanently! I'll try making it more mushy...

    Bolting food

Hello all! I have a mini that bolts his pelleted food and recently got chocked so bad, the vet had to come out and tube him to relieve the chock. She suggested adding a about 3 large rocks in his bucket to help slow him down. That didn't work because the rocks moving around freaked him out and...

Need advice on taming new minis

Thanks Taz & candycar! My neighbor was shocked by her farriers comment as well. She even said she might start using mine after hearing this. He comes and does her horses sometimes when she isn't there and now she is wondering if he mistreats her horses. What a jerk! He probably has the...

Need advice on taming new minis

I just have to share a couple things that came up today. First off, my neighbor had her farrier out today for her horses and she was telling him about my new minis hooves and how I was making such progress with them and working toward getting them tame enough to tend to their overgrown hooves...

Need advice on taming new minis

Just an update.....I did let them out in the bigger pasture today and pinned up my other minis so they could explore without any other distractions. They spent the whole day out there, but when feeding time came and they saw me, they came running back into their pen to eat! They gave me no...

Need advice on taming new minis

Thank you all for all the supportive encouragement and advice! Things are going slow, but I am making great progress! I am able to touch one of my girls on her nose, under her chin and she will let me run my hand up her face between her eyes as long as I have treats ready! The other one comes...

Need advice on taming new minis

I am making great progress! They both will easily take treats from my hand. They follow me around when I am in their pen and seem pretty comfortable with me. They have also taken treats from my kids (with a little hesitation)! I have been able to lightly touch their noses and under their chins...

Need advice on taming new minis

Hi everyone! I had a vet out just after I first posted and she concluded they had a upper respiratory infection. She had me start them on uniprim powdered antibiotic mixed into their pellets 2x daily. They have stopped coughing completely and only have a little bit of stuff coming out of...

Need advice on taming new minis

Thank you! I think they are so precious! I'm not sure if they are sisters or not. They did not have any history on them to pass along to me when I got them. They definitely look alike! I have a vet coming out tomorrow so hopefully they will get the medicine they need to get better soon.

Need advice on taming new minis

Thanks for your input! I have been sitting on a 5 gallon bucket next to them when I feed them. I started out with the bucket far away and gradually made it closer each time I fed them. I am within 5 foot of them right now, but if I get up or move too much they step back. Otherwise they seem...

Need advice on taming new minis

Thank you so much for all the pointers. I do feel more hopeful after reading this. I did not realize there was an antibiotic that could go in their food. Could you tell me what it is and I will start that immediately. I will definitely let you know my progress. I'm going to use your...

Need advice on taming new minis

I recently adopted 2 mini mares that were neglected. Ages 4 and 6. They had belonged to an elderly lady and she surrendered them to animal welfare because she was no longer able to care for them. They are slightly thin and their hooves are very overgrown. They were left out without shelter...

    Minis that cant get along

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions! I have put them back together and so far I've only seen 2 very short battles! They were peacefully grazing in the pasture and out of nowhere, it was on! Kicking and squealing! My original mini landed a couple solid kicks and the new one quickly...
