    To show or do therapy...

It is possible to do both with the same horse. A therapy horse would require a lot more training and acclimation to strange environments, different noises, smells, confined spaces etc. A lot will depend on you. Your confidence and experience. Both of which will grow over a long time, as well as...

    Transporting miniatures

Don't laugh but I've transported my minis in an old full size Dodge van that I've had for 20 years. I put a board behind the seats to block it off to neck height. I attached tie down lugs to the pins in the floor to attach the lead ropes. A long, sturdy ramp to get them in. The floor is already...

    Coyotes and Mini's -

We have an abundant coyotes population here in our area. So far they have not proven to be a problem with my minis. I have a small donkey, a pet not a guardian, but the noise he makes would probably scare the devil himself away. The coyotes here have taken lambs and sheep but not messed with...

    Hello!

I don't know what Bermuda grass is but 1 acre for a mini is pretty good even if the grass is low quality. MInis can generally get fat on air. My pastures are broken up into roughly .5 acre sections for my minis and I rotate them through. Supplement with good quality hay and you'll be fine. As...

Need to Vent. Many colics, no answers

Thanks for posting that. I never knew there was a link. I assumed more instances of colic in winter to be associated with less water intake due to cold or frozen water. I also thought that maybe they are more prone to dehydration during the winter since the humidity is so low. I've noticed that...

    Quidding

They do get used to almost anything, don't they? That's a lot of grass and gunk stuck in there.

    Quidding

I put a small package of childs orange flavor electrolytes in Coral's water every two days to encourage her to drink more. 1 packet to 5 gallon bucket isn't much but she seems to like the taste. I don't want to overdo it. She is the only one who had colic.

    Constant runny eye

I put a small pack of childs orange flavor electrolytes in Coral's water every second day to encourage drinking and some extra salts. She seems to enjoy the taste.

    Constant runny eye

The vet was never clear on how the grass got into the sinuses. They were very thorough with the xrays and could find no holes, missing or out of place teeth, or any other path for the grass to get in there. It was there and it was very obviously grass. To this day, on occasion, I can smell...

    Constant runny eye

Cayuse: Your eye ordeal sounds unpleasant. My little stallion went through a nasty, chronic sinus infection. Weeks and weeks of antibiotics with little effect. The vet cost me a fortune with scoping, x-rays and everything else. They drilled holes is his skull, and irrigated his sinuses in an...

    Constant runny eye

Thank you everyone for your advise. Today there is no redness and the discharge is back to being pearly white and very little of it. A little bit in the corner, and when I pull it a little string of it came out. I have a very wise horse person stopping in to take a look on Friday morning. She's...

    How much exercise?

He's cute and should clean up quite nice. One of my minis was really fat. His back was flat enough to set a table on. Put him on a crash diet, restricted his forage and introduced him to lunging, walking and teaching him tricks. Took about 6 months but he was in great shape. Solid as a rock.

    Constant runny eye

My filly Coral always seems to have runny eyes. Sometimes its one eye, sometimes its both but it is a very regular occurrence. Most times it clears up on its own and I wonder if its just allergies or dust. She appears to have no other symptoms. No temperature, no foul odor from the discharge and...

How do you gain an abused horse's trust?

Happy to hear you are making progress.

Need to Vent. Many colics, no answers

I know it seems overly simple but do you know if your boy is drinking enough water for his needs? Can you isolate him and monitor his intake?

How do you gain an abused horse's trust?

I know its taboo to some but I taught mine to love their halters with treats. Every time I got the halter on, they got a treat. A few weeks of that, cut it back to a treat every second time, then just once in a while. They still come running when they see me coming with or without a halter...

That is so great to hear.

    Is this a coyote track?

I hear what you are saying about the straight tracks. You are right. Dogs tend to have a wandering pattern while coyotes are usually all business moving when from place to place. If you saw other prints with longer claws with pointed tips that gives me pause. Do you have wolves in your area? A...

    New/First Donkey!

He's a nice looking fellow. Good luck with him! I too have a Jack that I rescued. He is also very friendly fellow. I'm keeping him intact as I might try for a mini mule in the next year or so. He doesn't appear to have any hormone related vices thus far and treats the girls very well when he...

    Is this a coyote track?

I would expect the impression left by nails to be longer and pointed if it was a coyote. That looks like closely clipped nails to me. Coyote tracks usually have a larger space between the 2nd and 3rd toe and the heel pad.
