    Halter sizes

Obviously I don't have any minis yet, but I was at the farm co-op today for chicken feed and noticed beautiful leather halters. There were several sizes, and it looked like "suckling" was the smallest size, next one up was weanling. They weren't terribly expensive either, around twenty bucks...

    Learning to trim hoofs

PaintPonyLover, you are always very full of good info! I've been disconnected from horses in my brain lately... lost my bichon back end of February and last Wednesday, my chihuahua passed unexpectedly! Two dogs in 7 weeks. I'm in a funk. Need to get over and visit the minis. Always makes...

    Learning to trim hoofs

I don't necessarily want to vaccinate annually, but that's what the vet said to do <shrugs> For my dogs, I do rabies as required by law, and only the puppy series on distemper/parvo. I try to keep it as minimal as possible while still offering immunity.

    Learning to trim hoofs

Hoofs? Hooves? Why on earth does plural of hoof sound so weird to me ;) I found a guy who is happy to do their feet, thankfully. Has a lovely Aussie accent

    Learning to trim hoofs

So, being a dog groomer, I'm quite used to maintaining pets here without visits to the groomer Saves me $60 plus bucks every 6 weeks. Anyway, I called around yesterday to the horse vet and farrier and got a general price so that I can budget for the minis (2). Vet looks like about $360...

    I smell like barn

So DD goes to a riding instructor, who has Portuguese something or other horses, and a mini stallion for her daughter. She texted me last night to see if I would "consider owning Pokie." Well, I've seen pictures of him. First, he's white. Not a bit fan of white horses, honestly. Second...

    I smell like barn

Good point. They are all together at the moment but I wonder if mare/gelding is a better idea or has a better chance of getting along long term

    I smell like barn

They are all together except Vicaro who is in the paddock with other easy keepers. He really is sweet but a lot bigger than I wanted so I think it may be down to Flash and Marisol. However , every time I visit I seem to have a new favorite! There are some lovely pinto ones there too but none...

    I smell like barn

Pretty much changed my mind on the driving, although it's pretty clear that Marisol is just too tiny to pull much. Flash or Vaquero would be able to, though. I DO want to be able to do agility stuff, and have them do some jumping and longeing, however. I think any of them could do it, not...

    Horse Agility/Halter Obstacle

Anyone do this with their guys? It looks fun. I'm already into dog agility, and building the obstacles for them, why not trickle down into the horses? StarPoint miniature horses has some training videos, the trailers look pretty good. Man, I can hardly wait for next year!

    Low Starch that I like

The mini trainer I visited feeds that. How much per mini are you feeding?

New to Minis, Lots of questions

Newtominis, we are planning on a lean-to addition to our little red "barn" (12x20" mower shed). The addition would be something like 20x12, with 2 stalls that are 6x8' and then a storage area and an overhang so they can stand under there for shelter and shade. Fencing I was thinking about 4...

    Pasture, to improve or not?

Yes, agree that I"m getting way too much information in my head, very conflicting! I'm the one with chickens, and I have them in tractors, which I think is just about the best option next to true free ranging when we have such a hawk/vulture/fox problem around here. nothing like some nice...

    Pasture, to improve or not?

Do you think then that I should give up the idea of having minis altogether? The more I read, the more nervous I get, and it sounds like you have to be so careful with horses. For instance, the lawn guy says I have fescue, which I just read is bad for horses because of the fungus it could...

    Slow Feeding Hay Options

Thanks! I also found the Hay Pillow, which gets them to eat in a head down position. Such fun things to shop for!

    Pasture, to improve or not?

They will have a dry lot paddock that will be something like 90' by 60' plus two 150x90 or so pasture areas, or just one 300'x90' pasture would work, too. So they will have a dry lot area. I'm trying to decide how much work I should put into the pasture areas, or should I just leave them since...
