    Feeding seniors

Thanks everyone. I've upped her alfalfa to 6lbs and 6oz of flax. It looks like she's building muscle in her hindquarters and they're filling out, but she's dropped a little on the weight tape. Is it normal when putting on weight? I looked through everything Chewy has but wasn't able to find...

    Feeding seniors

Thanks so much everyone. Right now she gets her alfalfa and flax in a pen for as long as it takes her to eat it all, which is about an hour. She's ok with that since she has yummy food...then she's all "come on human! Set me free! Gotta make sure the young ones know I'm the queen!". Yes, she...

    Feeding seniors

I have a 30+ year old mini who's lost a bit of weight since I started turning the herd out for exercise on a 1/2 mile track. They all go out every day with sealed grazing muzzles on and they make 1-3 circuits every day. The old lady always leads the way and has a lot of get up and go. She has...

    halters for sensitive head

Thanks Debby. She was actually quite ok with me gently examining her ears, without need for any bribery. Then again, part of my training approach has to get them used to me doing weird things so maybe its paying off. I've given her a daily probiotic in the past, but it didn't work that well for...

    halters for sensitive head

This is the same mini who I trained to let me brush her teeth when she had a tooth issue. She'll let me do pretty much anything if food is involved. She's a mini. I certainly can see if I can check out her ears. Clicker training is a beautiful thing. I just have to make sure I do it where her...

    halters for sensitive head

As far as why grazing muzzle, her full sister has EMS and has had a bout of laminitis. While this mini was on the thin side when she was younger, she's gained weight and is doing much better. She's now at the same age as her sister was when she had her laminitis issues, and I really would like...

    halters for sensitive head

One of my minis is kind of hypersensitive to things generally, including halters. She leads very well but will rub her head a lot if left with a halter on. She always winds up rubbing her head a lot when waiting for her turn with the farrier. This has happen with both a nylon or rope halter on...

    grazing muzzles

Thanks for the suggestions. I can't seem to find Roma muzzles for minis. I got some Tough 1 muzzles, but the pony size was too large for my pony and the mini size was too big for my minis. I was hoping to find just the Tough 1 muzzle to attach to a halter, but it doesn't seem to exist for minis.

Seedy toe - white line disease

Personally, I love the White Lightning gel. IME its a bit easier to work with. When I used it, I cleaned the hoof thoroughly, applied the gel and then put on a pair of clean hoof boots. With a mild case, I'd just leave the boots on for several hours and then remove & clean them. With a more...

    grazing muzzles

I had 2 grazing muzzles for my minis which they've both destroyed. Bent the metal clasps on both and broke a plastic keeper on the other. Needless to say, I'm not terribly impressed with the quality of Cashel's grazing muzzles. Any suggestions for ones that are durable, well designed & mini sized?

    Triple Crown Safe Starch Forage

My minis didn't do well on Safe Starch. IIRC, there are some grain ingredients in it (rice, soy, etc) and my minis are sensitive to that (weight loss, colic, hair issues). I've used TC premium grass forage as a supplement carrier for a while, and they love it. One of mine is has EMS and is a...

Tested positive for insulin resistant any advice

I have a pony and 2 minis who are all IR. In my experience, giving NSAIDs really doesn't help (banamine in this case). IR in horses is very different from diabetes in humans. True diabetes in horses is very rare and that's when you'd use metformin. I've spent many, many years researching this...

    rope halters?

I had made a rope halter for my minis, and it worked pretty well. Unfortunately, its gone missing. I have a web halter, but it doesn't work well for my 32" mini. She's a little high strung and sometimes needs a sharper 'reminder' to behave that I can give with a web halter. I can't make another...

looking for a size 28" blanket

Kensington makes nice mini blankets. They fit the best out of everything I've used. I think the Amigo Petite Plus comes in very small sizes. I've never used them, though. I wouldn't recommend Schneiders, since the 2 mini turnouts I had got shredded pretty fast.

    Opinions on fencing

We have 5ft no climb with pressure treated posts. Gotta make sure its good fencing, since my minis are evil. One of mine crawled UNDER a horse size round pen panel, and proceeded to create mayhem. She also went through snow fence. Just because they're little doesn't mean they aren't devious....

    Supplement for dry skin, suggestions?

I feed both flax and chia. Mine will only eat Omega Horseshine. 2-4 tablespoons per day. I feed 1oz by weight of chia seeds. Works very well for mine. I've been getting chia from Equine Chia. Mine will also start to get skin issues if I feed them anything that contains grain...which means most...

    Pawing Horses...

I have 2 full sisters. One paws, and the other doesn't. I've tried a lot, and nothing seems to stick. Feeding her last. Feeding her first. Waiting until she's standing quietly, or put it down fast. Telling her to "stop it!". I've stuck with one method for months without any resolution. The worst...

    Easyboot Mini Hoof Boots

I don't fully understand why SoftRides are the way they are. They don't hold up well during turnout, and the design isn't flexible enough for true rehab purposes. They might be good for shipping shod horses, but I'm not sure. They caused my foundered pony a lot of pain during a bout of acute...

    Nuirsing Rescue Mare Underweight

Hopefully this article from UC Davis is of help. Assuming the vet thinks she's healthy and has no ulcers, parasites or dental issues, I'd start with diet. Not sure how much grain you can safely feed a mini at each feeding, but I'd gradually work up to that for at least 2 (maybe 3) feedings a...
