    Halter Training

Thanks Paula Yes, Crystal (Dam) and Abbey are our only 2 horses. Crystal is a totally laid back, easy going mare and has allowed both my husband and I to interact with her foal from birth. In fact when we noticed Crystal was birthing I went to the paddock gate and Crystal ran right over and...

    Halter Training

Thanks all, she really is fighting this halter thing - she is happy to play with it, put it over her nose but any attempt to fasten it she nips and / or rears. I think we have let her have her own way for too long......... being our first foal I am sure it is the humans fault for spoiling her...

    Halter Training

Hi All I think I need to turn back the clock? I have just read an article that suggests best halter training time is at just a couple of months old. Abbey, our first foal, is now 4 months old. I have been into the paddock daily for a couple of weeks with the halter. She is ever so friendly...

    Unexpected bundle of Joy

I posted a photo some time back - our new Mum to be - Crystal (and new owner) - just to check she was looking OK to the experienced eye. We were expecting Crystal to foal in September, and going back to the breeder for foaling - imagine the confusion and shock when, at 11pm, whilst...

Crystal.. first time mom and first time owner

Thanks for the comments. Of course she is forever telling me she hasn't had enough to eat! As she has a good weight on her do I need to feed any sort of supplements in these last few months of her pregnancy, or is grazing and hay enough? I realise feeding out anything more will make her put...

Crystal.. first time mom and first time owner

Hi All Being new to horse ownership, and both Crystal and I new to foals we are looking for some reassurance or constructive suggestions regarding her weight - other than her baby bump. The foal is due in September - today is the first day of winter in New Zealand so she is wearing her winter...

    Rain!

Oh my Marsha - now my mud problem looks pathetic - at least Crystal's barn (much the same as yours to look at, except it has a rounded roof) is dry and cosy

    Things you never think of....

oh my, not nice..... Mare's with foals, you keep their manes trimmed? is that for the same reason, so the foal wont be playing about and get tangled up in mum? Sooooooo many things to think about being a new mini owner, and a new mini foal owner-to-be I trimmed Crystal's forelock to...

    managing mud!

Thanks Amysue and Marsha... Great ideas. I had given pea gravel a thought or two, but been put off by a well meaning friend who advised against it with mini's. Not sure I understood her thinking but decided I was a newbie to mini's and hoofed animals. Hadn't even given sand a thought, I...

    managing mud!

Hi AnnaC During the day she is in the paddock with her alpaca friends. Unfortunately until she has her foal in September she is the only horse we have, and thus alone at night. She has plenty of hay but is basically lonely - I could set up a hammock in the corner and sleep over, but, well...

    managing mud!

no problem with erosion, totally flat. It is volcanic soil so drains fairly well, but we have high rain falls in our area over winter - 32mm Saturday and another 25mm Sunday.

    managing mud!

We are coming into winter (New Zealand) and high rain falls where we live (sub tropical). Up until now our paddocks have only known alpacas and not hoofed animals. I like to take crystal out of the paddock evening / nights so she isn't grazing 24/7. She has a walk-in barn with a corral area...

    mane trimming suggestions?

horsenut50 - that looks so beautiful. Glad my mini can't see your hairdressing skills. I cut Crystal's forelock as she had a continual weeping eye and I wondered if it was the hair irritating. Weep has dried up since cutting, so I am happy with that - but it sure looks a bit "hacked" ...

The mini who thinks she is an alpaca

My mum use to spin, before her stroke, and has spun dog - never horse! We just have our "boys" as pets. Not a strong market for alpaca fibre in New Zealand, and as we only have pet boys I dont want to compete with the farms who are in business, so on shearing day we either just give it away or...

The mini who thinks she is an alpaca

Best feed programme for my pregnant mare

Here is my gal Crystal, with her buddies. She is the only horse at our place at the moment and has to be content with Alpacas until her foal arrives!!

Best feed programme for my pregnant mare

Thanks all for the advice. I had no idea about mare/foal feed so I will check out what is here, usually we have the same as Ausie. so that will be a start. She is my absolute baby and I wanna make sure I get it right for her and the little one. Yep - that is her in the picture. She is a real...
