    Paradise track for minis

Secuono you're so right! The horses waste loose hay terribly. The mini donks on the other hand make sure EVERY stem is cleaned up! The slow feeder we made has a metal grate in it that is heavy enough it goes down as the hay is eaten. I'll have to see if I have a good picture of it. If not, I'll...

    Paradise track for minis

We have just a 3 acre area, about 1/2 is a pasture that we just did electric fence to make a track around the outside perimeter of that pasture. Very cost effective & we used the poly wire, so it looks nice too. Where we are it's super flat with no hills or obstacles of any kind. Fortunately we...

    observations of the horse industry

Went to a horse sale yesterday... on average, decent broke horses were selling for $500. The 6 miniatures they had (bred mares w/ colts at side) averaged $90. Yeah, wow.

Berle's Journey - OTTB Barn Fire Survivor

Ok, I've been trying to decide if I should make any posts on my new guy or not, mostly because he's not a mini. BUT I know there are a lot of experienced horse owners, so it would be great to hear some suggestions! This horse is not legally mine, but the legal owner is leasing him to me with an...

    Polish proverb

:rofl :rofl :rofl Happy Friday. You totally just turned my day around. Not that I was worried about the monkeys.... more about the poo they were flinging!

    Hoof question--thrush??

I would lean more toward white line as well. I would keep it clean without digging into it, & apply either Pete's Goo 50/50 triple antibiotic ointment plus & athletes foot cream (or montistat) containing 1% clotrimazole with a syringe with no needle OR Tomorrow Dry Cow once a day at least. I...

    observations of the horse industry

That's a great idea! I do know that most of the camps around here have volunteers that take them home, but I'll start looking for other camps in neighboring states. Great thought!

    observations of the horse industry

How ironic you post this as I step into a new journey, helping an OTTB who's outlook was bleak... I received my first mini from a lady who bought her at auction for $25. She is registered, a palomino pinto dainty thing, but nothing remarkable. Super cute, not terrible conformation, but not what...

Late post - Ami's original start...

I (newbie!!!) appreciate the educational posts & the comments from everyone else! I wish I could convince my daughter to sit and take pictures, because I believe that going back and looking at what you're doing helps teach you just as much, if not more, than having someone else watch you & offer...

    Horse Show Etiquette

Ok, so the stud comment... I would be guilty of saying something like that to my daughter. Mostly because she's 7 & usually has her head in the clouds and isn't paying attention to what she's doing & is lagging behind me. Like at our first mini show this month, she was dinking around and I was...

    colour/markings question?

Interesting... I have a gelding that has similar markings, except instead of white lacing, he has darker lacing with lighter giraffe pattern over his loins. I always just thought it was something just unique to him, now you get me thinking! Please let us know what you find out from testing!

    Pony training question?

I am actually working on neck reining with my minis! It's not easy, because you have to be able to keep your reins high enough so they push against the neck rather than the shoulder. This is easy for me because my guy is 29" tall, I'm not sure how tall yours is? What I have been doing is walking...

    Any good zucchini recipes?

I attempted home-made zucchini granola bars yesterday. I probably should have started out with plain jane granola bars, but live & learn. They turned out to be more like a cake, but that's my fault since I shouldn't have doubled the recipe ha! They are actually really good!! Here's the recipe...

Tips for slowing down enthusiastic jumper

Another thing that has worked for me is stopping after the jump & resting for a beat before going to another. I have a 29" guy who is extremely pushy because he just wants to get done with the course! jump, stop, walk, trot, jump, stop has helped him. Also walking & trotting serpentines &...

Training / working in the heat

I try.... TRY to get up early in the morning. It's usually light enough by 5:45, so I try to get to the barn at 5:30. Now, that doesn't always happen. & on the days I don't get up early, I find something more mentally strenuous to work on if it's hot, or else wait until 8 that night to start...

Questions for a Green Driver Showing for the 1st Time

HI! I am green too, I showed in my very first show this weekend!!! We did great! No first places, but I managed to stay in control and in the cart while literally shaking with nerves. Trick #1... RELAX & breathe!!! The judges took the time to chat with me while waiting for results, & they were...
