    Negative Judge's Comments...

I agree with Bevann. Having shown horses over many years, I know which judges I do NOT want to show under! When I get a show bill the first thing I look for is who the judge(s) are and make a showing decision right then and there. There is no point in showing under a judge who obviously (and...

    Alpha Mare kicking

I have a mini horse like that (doesn't "play well with others"). When I am with them I AM the "alpha mare" and there are no problems. But they have to be separated by a fence when turned out. I don't need or want vet bills, not to mention an injured horse.

    Our mini barn

    HALLOWEEN COSTUME CONTEST!

This is Merlin and he is the sheriff. He's quite a little trooper. (pun intended)

    Online Shows

I agree Targets mom. I joined the Horse Agility club based in England and am having a lot of fun with it. It has competitors from all over the world. You should look into it. There a are quite a few Americans that have joined. You get the pattern on line and then send a video of your round via...

    Shots

My vet explained it when I asked about size. His response was "the horse may be smaller, but the bugs aren't any smaller" I have had all of my minis vaccinated (in the butt)for the past 6 years and have never had a problem. Mostly used the Innovator. Maybe a change in brands would be in order.

    Greenville Ohio Fairgrounds

Has anybody been to the Darke County fairgrounds AMHR shows? If so can you tell me a little about the facility? Stalls? Covered arena? Wash racks? Motels nearby? I would like to go to the Area 2 show, but don't know if I want to drive 4 hours there and back. I have a show schedule, but not much...

    Trick Training

The advice above is very good. If you want show your mini, the trick training cues may interfere with that. That's why I don't teach them behaviors that might be confused with what you really want, especially in the show ring. Remember some of those cute little tricks are considered bad...

Calling all Obstacle in Hand persons. Really need help

Put her in the circle with a lead. Hold the lead and give a firm but gentle tug (or 2 )on the lead toward the ground. Back away 2 steps with the lead in your hand. If she steps out put her back in. If she doesn't, give her a treat and say "good girl" Repeat. After a few successful "stay ins"...

    Tube worming minis

Why would anyone tube worm a horse of any kind these days? The only time a horse is tubed on my farm is when there is evidence of colic. Tubing is very traumatic on the esophagus and if not done right the medication can go down into the lungs. Paste wormer is so much safer and costs a lot...

What classes should I enter? PHOTOS

Have you been to any AMHR shows to watch classes? Have you read the rule book on any classes you are interested in? I would not pay a bunch of money to enter your (very attractive) mini in many classes and not do well. This is not "on the job" training. You need to practice at home and decide...

Planning my show schedule for 2014!

The best thing to do would be go on the AMHR website to find the shows that would be near you. The shows will be posted as AMHR gets them, so go there every week or so to see what has been added. The Area 2 show is a regional show for AMHR. I assume you are a member of AMHR and your minis are...

I have to brag! Look what we made!

One of my minis is 28". You have to almost stand on your head to clip him! He won't lay on his back for me, which would make it much easier I like your idea. My farrier probably would too.

Windchill -20/40 degree expected tips on keeping animals safe.

Another way of protecting the cord and the minis is to run them through PVC pipe (I use 2") Most of my outlets in the barn are above the stalls, so I just cover the part of the cords that are in or near the mini stalls. I, too have one that is "mouthy". The others probably won't bother, but as I...

    Clicker training treat question

I feed 1/2 of a baby carrot. My minis would stand on their heads for it, if I asked ! I don't give them for every move they make because they would focus only on the reward and not what you are trying teach and also start nipping. You didn't say how old this mini is, so I'm not sure if a...

    New here :)

I don't know much about the ASPC registration process, but I have shown in many halter obstacle classes. So you need to teach her about stepping over rails on the ground, turns on the forehand and pivots on the back end. Also, you are presenting your horse which means smooth transitions between...

    Is AMHA located in Texas?

I have contacted the AMHA by email several times and they have responded very quickly. Probably won't get back to you until Monday. If you are a member they are usually in the December magazine mailing.

    Gelding Getting Aggressive

Jenny, I totally agree with everything that was said- you must get control and be the "alpha mare". The only other suggestion I have is regarding his diet. Young horses, not working very hard, and getting high sugar treats and grain tend to make them very hyperactive, especially in this...
