    locked stifle--won't unlock

Minimor, I was kicked by the bigger horse when we first got them. Totally my fault, and I know now what I did wrong. I'm not sure about the Palmolive either--she said she had heard of it from other people and thought it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. What are the drawbacks of having this...

    locked stifle--won't unlock

Justice's stifle is still locked. It unlocks at times when I back him, but it goes right back. Weird how we've had him 2 months and it's just now happening like this. Vet quoted surgery at $500 at an animal hospital that is 2 hrs away and I have no way to get him there. This stinks for him...

    locked stifle--won't unlock

all of our fencing is tensile/hot wire. is there an easy way to separate the pasture with the t posts using that wire? would something else do just as well or better? ... I think we have cattle fencing but not sure how much.

    locked stifle--won't unlock

The older one had a bad bout with it the second day we had them. he was stuck out in the pasture and wouldn't budge. we padded his feet, etc. and got him better. we are first time horse owners and didn't know about lush grass, etc. the grass was pretty high and we now know to keep it short...

    locked stifle--won't unlock

Hi all, I am in need of help again. I just can't seem to get things right yet with these horses. I pen the horses at night. During the day, for the last two months, they pretty much stay penned while we are at work and are turned out about 5 to 7 hours a day. I'm learning that this is not...

Hi again - a few more questions

thanks for the replies! Marty, yes they are wood shavings-sorry! I buy them at TSC. We just went yesterday and bought the pellets and put the shavings over top. I like the idea of gravel to aid withaid with drainage. To be honest, I'm a little nervous about gelding. We both work full-time...

Hi again - a few more questions

Well, I've looked more closely at the younger horse and it doesnt not appear to be lice. His fur looked a little thicker today, so maybe it was just shedding/scratching. I turn the boys out for 4-5 hours (at least) every day and it never fails---as soon as they are back in the pen they both...

Hi again - a few more questions

Hello everyone, We've come a long way since my first few weeks with the minis. We are into a groove, schedule-wise, and the horses are doing pretty good. Our barn is almost finished (yay!) and our plans are moving in the direction of making a dry lot for them to be out in most of the time. I...

New to mini horses, lots of questions!!

Hi all, I don't have a lot of time to write as I'm on my lunch break. Freedom seems to be doing better with his feet. I stopped the Bute Monday night and he doesn't seem to be in any discomfort. We are going to try to get the pads off his feet tonight-we didn't get the chance last night with...

New to mini horses, lots of questions!!

I did not feel his hooves because I didn't know to do so. I just wrapped them like the vet said to do. She did come the next day and felt his feet and said she was feeling for a pulse - I do remember that. When I talked to her earlier this week, she said that she didn't think the bone had...

New to mini horses, lots of questions!!

Wow, Matt, sorry to hear about your Lexus!! It's hearbtreaking to lose an animal, I know. I feel a lot better today about everything. The vet called to check on Freedom and I gave her the report. He's still standing all the time that I see. Tonight will be his last dose of bute then I'm...

New to mini horses, lots of questions!!

I will try to measure them tomorrow--we had a busy evening and I didn't get the chance. I have a question about the founder/laminitis. I spoke with another horse owner this evening and she said that once the horse has foundered, he's foundered for life. She said he may have better days than...

New to mini horses, lots of questions!!

I have no idea how much they weigh or how tall they are. I will visit that site and try to measure them and report back. Here are some pictures we've taken over the last couple of days:

New to mini horses, lots of questions!!

Hi everyone! Yesterday was another busy day, outside of the horses, so I didn't have time to post. It poured the rain most of the day yesterday, so I didn't get a chance to get the grass clippings out of the pasture. Hopefully today will allow me to do that. We live in Ohio--north central...

New to mini horses, lots of questions!!

I left a message with the name of a farrier that was given to me by a friend and the vet today. I told him that he was founderd but I never received a phone call back. I will see what I can do tomorrow about contacting someone else. One thing that I thought was strange was that the vet didn't...

New to mini horses, lots of questions!!

The bute must be working because he has been on his feet a lot more today. He's only in that pen so not much room to "walk" but plenty to spread out and lay down. He has been having bowel movements so that's good. This will be their first "normal" night here. I'm going to do my best not to go...

New to mini horses, lots of questions!!

Here is the pen that my husband and dad built for the boys. Tomorrow I will be heading to the store to get the clip on water buckets and their halters will be coming off. Freedom is the one with the blue halter and you can't see Justice too well. Hubby is building a similar pen on the other...

New to mini horses, lots of questions!!

The pen is built! Husband did a wonderful job. The grass under all the straw is not lush and is pretty scarce, I think it will be ok. Vet said it shouldn't be a problem. Ok, so new job for me tomorrow is picking up grass clippings for an almost acre pasture! By hand I was able to get most...
