    Quarter Method for Showmanship

I also come from the stock horses, and my reason for wanting to use the quarter method for showing is partially because it is what I am used to, but mostly due to the whole reason it was put into use to begin with... Quite simply, it's a safety issue. The reason for stepping back to the same...

Performance horse age - when is it time to retire?

I'd like some information from people who show in the performance classes as to how long of a show career is the norm for minis. I am coming from QH, where (unfortunately) horses are started, trained and shown on a schedule I find too stringent for a young horse. (Some people are riding long...

How to show, what to feed, and how to prep.

Hi Lara, I am new to minis too (we showed QH for 20+ years), so I am sure you will get some great info from much more experienced competitors than I am with the minis, but I would suggest that you maybe look at videos on youtube? (That is what I have been doing.) If you put AMHR or AMHA show in...

    The Show Look

Thank you very much for the info! I am coming from QH where the rules re attire are very stringent (footwear - boots with a heel, shirts/jackets - long sleeves only, hats/helmets must be worn, etc.), so I wanted to make sure I am properly attired when I start showing next year. Looking "put...

    The Show Look

Is there anywhere online I can look to find out what is acceptable (and not) clothing for halter and jumping for R and A shows? Thanks!

    Aloha Select Sale Prices

Hello. Thanks so much for posting the prices. I was there but did not write them down, so it's interesting to see them all in one place! I did want to offer a correction on #24. We were the high bidder at $2500. and were told a reserve much higher than $2600, so you may want to check on and/or...

    Hunter or jumper?

Thank you very much, everyone! Really excited to try this next year. Now, I just need a horse!

    Hunter or jumper?

targetsmom, Could you tell me how best to "keep it fun?" My plan was plenty of pats and praise, not pushing too hard or working too long, and ending on a good note, but that was about it. I don't normally hand feed treats, and was just wondering other ways than that and the above to keep...

    Neighbor Rant

High voltage electric fence with signs? I would pick up the phone or go over there and have a serious chat with him. Obviously, he did not understand the first time...

Help, my filly is getting too sassy and nipping!!

We bred and raised QH halter and riding babies for quite awhile, and if you don't instill respect for them at the beginning, you end up with a surly, spoiled LARGE brat, capable of really hurting you. My suggestions may sound a little silly, but using "horse" language to stop this kind of...

    Glitter and Dye

When I showed riders, there was a lady who was quite um, blessed, in the chestage dept. who rode in a very inadequate brassiere. I was watching the class with my trainer when she jogged by on her horse. I was thinking "Oww!" when he quipped, "Looks like two puppies fightin' under a blanket!" Lol.

Ants Ants and more Ants - what is a safe spray for pasture?

Diatomaceous earth - food grade ONLY! - will kill fire or other ants safely in a pasture. It's easy to use and safe for anything that does not have an exoskeleton. The only caveat is to wear a mask or something to keep from breathing the dust in when you mix it up with water. Works like a charm.

    Glitter and Dye

Just to clarify AQHA's rules... Lips chains (over the top gum only, not through the mouth) are allowed for Stallions over 1 yo in Open & Amateur, Amateur & Youth Mares and Geldings 1+ year old, and weanlings. I have put 100's of AQHA halter points on numerous horses of all ages, and have never...

    Lost my first foal

How heartbreaking. I am so very sorry for your loss.

    Need Jump ideas!!

Sorry, I am used to "big" horses, and we don't ever use PVC. I can see your point about minis not damaging or breaking it though! Your jumps are very creative.

    Need help with color

Now, THAT'S very interesting! (The somatic mutation markings.) I've never seen anything like that.

    Need Jump ideas!!

I am brand new to it myself, and I am sure you will get great info from others, but I would caution you to be very careful using PVC for jumps. If for some reason they should split or break, they end up in very sharp shards and could be quite dangerous for you and/or your horse. For that reason...
