    Transporting miniatures

I started with a full-size 3-horse slant for our 3 minis; hated it; when hooked up to my husband’s full-size truck, the whole mess was almost as long as a tractor/trailer semi. I have a Ford Ranger so spent some time looking for a lighter trailer. I wanted dual tires, but really had to watch...

    Coyotes and Mini's -

Sorry about your loss. We have coyotes in my area (PNW) and we have 3 minis (30-32-inch size.) During daytime, I’ve watched a lone coyote walk through our pasture within a foot or so of our mare; she didn’t twitch an ear and kept grazing. I’ve had a coyote (again during daylight hours) run...

    Changes to Forum?

. Thanks. I have no other questions; just had some momentary confusion.

Introduction - New here & to minis - need advice on first!

Husband and I are both prior military (no PTSD) but my husband was afraid of horses so I started looking at mini’s as a less-threatening alternative. We bought two mini’s at the Nordstrom daughter bankruptcy auction in 2011; I think the horses were of decent bloodlines, but no registration. My...

    Changes to Forum?

Hmph... no idea whether change of forum ownership means anything. I remember your user name so it’s nice to still see you here. Thanks for responding; I’m going to go pontificate to a newbie that drew my attention.

    Changes to Forum?

I haven’t posted here in quite some time. A while ago, I noticed digest versions of the forum in my inbox and have been meaning to check it out (since I never had this place set up to email me anything.) So has there been a change of ownership? (I don’t see Lil Beginnings anywhere.) Not...

    Service/companion Minis

I think it's great that apparently you're doing on-site visits with your horses. You had mentioned oxygen tanks and wheel chairs and appeared to be blowing off liability issues. I think our little filly would be great for that sort of thing. But, I've been hesitant due to my concerns regarding...

    Service/companion Minis

. You have got to be kidding, right? Institutions have insurance to cover their own interests. Unless you have a contract, the institution has no obligation to cover the horse owner. And if something happens, anybody can sue anyone, regardless of merit... You still have to defend yourself...

    Healthy hooves

Is this topic still alive? And I'm not sure whether you're feeling like learning or whether you're trying to save. When we started with minis, I thought hooves looked pretty easy. ...well, except I don't have the hand-strength to work the snipppers. And my husband said NO way in heck was he...

I have a lot of questions

I'm not rich either, but still wishing. I wonder whether you might receive more focused responses if you provided a general location/climate? It rains a lot here in western Washington. Our minis have barn/stalls (unheated) but the minis are allowed outside 24/7, even the old blind guy. We...

How to get overweight mare to slim down

I wouldn’t presume to comment whether your horse is too fat based on your photos. I can’t even figure out when ours are too fat. Round bale vs square bale vs flakes makes no never mind. How large is the flake? And what’s in that hay? Texas hay is probably different from our Washington hay. I...

    Wonky tooth?

I'm curious why this post was moved from the main forum to the back porch? To me it seemed like a legitimate question. Regarding the "lump on cheek" : Our mare (approx. 9 yrs.) has significantly larger "lumps" on both sides-- as viewed on outside of cheeks. I've asked the vet when teeth were...

    Mature height prediction??

Or if he's anything like ours: While I'm hiding the level, somebody would be trying to eat the stick or while I was manipulating the stick, they'd be nibbling on the level.

    About those teeth...

My goal is once per year. That said, I’m a bad human being because I ended up skipping it this year. I had looked online for an equine dentist; I found one that would have had to come from out of state, and her web site indicated that she would only show up for like 8 horses (we have 3) and it...

    Weaning info

I'm kind of surprised but kind of not, that people would frown upon weaning "cold turkey." We weaned "cold turkey" long after it should have been done. I had read some crap on the internet that the mare would wean the foal herself when it was time. (Some day I may feel brave enough to tell you...

    Opinions on fencing

I think I jinxed myself by commenting on this topic. The day after I posted, Nicky took his gate down. I've been focused on fences and got bit by a gate. The gate is one of those tubular livestock gates: 12-ft wide or maybe 16-ft; I don't know. On one side it's mounted on u-shaped "screws/pins"...

    Opinions on fencing

Good fencing is crazy-expensive; forget paint or stain. We have 4x4 posts with 2x6 rails; 4 each on the rails. I have an envelope marked "Fence" (to track costs) and don't even like to look in it; I once tried to measure/estimate linear footage and came up with approx 2,500 linear feet. And...

Has anyone had experience with founder?

Thanks, but I realize that I could probably find a grazing muzzle to fit Baby. I don't want to. I don't leave anything on anyone's head when they're not under my immediate supervision (except Velcro fly masks, which they can/and sometimes do readily rip off.) I'm hoping that my pasture control...

    Feed storage

What surprised me about this article was the "moisture" factor. I always thought of fire risk as based on the "fire triangle" ...i.e. fuel, heat, oxygen. I didn't know about those nasty microbes. I read a little more and was unable to find a massive number of barn fires from self-combustion of...

    Feed storage

I am cringe-worthy. We have a ton or so out there in our barn. I never realized this was a potential issue; I'm aware/have read about silos self-combusting but never realized this was a concern with hay storage? (... it makes sense to me that grain storage in an enclosed silo with dust, etc...
