    Microchipping?

All my horses are chipped including my mini, as well as my dog. The biggest issue is deciding which chip to use. 132khz, the international standard, and the US breed associations standards, or 125khz, the US small animal/companion animal chip, that animal control can read? I chose 125khz, but...

    Fever after vaccination :(

Willing to bet it was a FD vaccine... had bad luck with them and heard lots of people complain about reactions. I avoid FD vaccines. Many are "out dated" too, other brands have newer technology with better results and less reactions, imo.

    gelding by the "signs"?

I've gelded and weaned hundreds without any issue :P I worry more about weather and bugs.

    weaning

3-6 months. Never gone by the almanac and don't intend to. We cold turkey dozens of babies a year and never had an issue.

Disinfecting Stalls, how do you do it?

I highly recommend Virkon S. Its much more robust and longer lasting than bleach.

    Bleaching stalls

Bleach degrades very quickly in the presence of organic material, which makes it rather ineffective for this use. Try a product called Virkon S instead, it is much more stable.

You Didn't Build That: ♫ Stop! Obamatime ♫

You can imagine his words meaning anything you want them to be. I hardly feel they are remotely close to what Republicans are trying to convince us they mean.

    Critique please, Thinking about gelding

I'm the other way around, unless a stallion shows me he doesn't deserve to keep his testicles, I'll let them keep them. My boys are very happy, social, and well mannered.

Do people not have temparement up on their list for breeding traits?

Temperament is #1 in my barn. People are shocked to learn my "geldings" are actually stallions.

Does The Minimum Wage Hurt Workers?

Exactly my point. I work retail as well.

Does The Minimum Wage Hurt Workers?

I'd get a pay cut from my miesly $8/hr if they cut minimum wage. How would I live on that?

Zimectrin Gold no more for me

We use it, and the active ingrediants, several times a year without problems. Maybe a bad batch?

    Oxytocin

Oxy will not help a mare's cycle whatsoever. All it does is cause smooth muscle contraction. Its commonly used to push fluid out of the uterus. If the doc said use the same as a big horse, then use it

    Electric fencing question.

You definitely need to multiply the distance by the number of strands you have, don't forget that! Then multiply by 10 (yes, ten) if you are using tape/poly/rope. We spaced out t-posts (I wouldn't use anything less sturdy) 25' with wood posts on the corners, and its held up wonderful. Had a...

Do you have to separate stallions, geldings and mares?

Stallions and geldings can fight to the death over mares, even if the gelding is less than interested.

    Electric fencing question.

Get the most powerful fencer you can afford... remember, the little 2mi one doesn't handle ANY weeds, you need more juice for those. I use a 50mi charger on my fence. I also use electric ROPE, not wire. Remember, any string, rope, or tape requires 10x the fencer, compared to plain wire. One...

    When Selling a Horse...

    Absolutely not.

    round bales

Most ponies explode when fed free choice. Biggest issue is mold/weather damage. I prefer squares myself, sinvce they are usually higher quality, store better (but more work), and are easier to control feed amounts.

How young can you geld a foal

Testosterone does promote heavier growth, wider face, testicular development.... without that testosterone, the energy that was being spent on those things can be spent on others things, mostly height. Is that a huge difference? Depends on the horse, but it is possible you'll get an "extra" inch...

How young can you geld a foal

I prefer to do it before weaning, so around 3mo if possible. That way the stress is lower. As long as you can palpate both testicles, they can be taken out.
