harness and bit for the first time

It was half and half. But since he didn't have side reins, or me holding him short, he had the freedom to check it out. Blackflies have wreaked havoc on my consistency record. But I've played 3 times with him since. Had whole harness on him with blinders and breast collar, he found this...

    Tips for webbing

There should be a wire embedded which you can use to bend the blinkers outwards. I think they're called "blinker stays" - if they don't have wire in them, they're not very useful. I had one like that which I unstitched, put wire in and re-stitched the stays.

harness and bit for the first time

Yes, hit & miss describes it. I think the other chunks worked out well because I carried a concept through to where he was comfortable with it and quit at good times. A month ago however, I had started a new chunk, then got the puppy and dropped Diesel's training like a stone. But I hadn't...

harness and bit for the first time

A good day with Diesel today! I put the harness girth, crupper and breeching on him for the first time, plus the open bridle and bit for the first time. (mullen bit) He took it remarkably well - had no anxiety about any of it. I thought some people here would like to hear how it went He has...

    tandem team ambitions

Sounds great! Sure does look cool to see a tandem in action.

    tandem team ambitions

Ok, preliminaries starting to look good - I think I will do a 7 day program with Diesel. Aims are getting understanding of the yields required for shafts/cart, and introducing the bit and full harness. He has only been wearing the halter and surcingle, no crupper yet. He has a basic...

    tandem team ambitions

Whoa, I "went south" myself for a few weeks! Got a new border collie pup - finishing the fourth week of heck... highly entertaining, but time consuming. Sure wasn't any headspace for training minis! However, I started working with Diesel again this week. 1st session yesterday, 2nd today...

    tandem team ambitions

I will have to be pretty good at line driving tandem before I take it any further

    tandem team ambitions

Yes, we were watching commercial horses drive in tandem at a show last fall and someone said you want your most controllable horse out front. That would be Lacey.

    tandem team ambitions

Well, I am just starting to put Diesel into a program of training. He had a few days around Christmas of 2012 as a yearling, then a few days last fall of line driving with Lacey. I have sold the other mini gelding I had - to a driving home. Now on to Diesel! He's turning 3 in May. My goal...

How much weight is safe for mini to drag?

You could also do one length or two of the arena, then stop and rest for a while. Interval training When Lacey was pulling the disks last fall, she would go for a while, then stop. When I saw she was puffing hard, I quit. She could pull it but it was a workout. Much harder to pull than the...

Another pair - more ground driving - page 3

Hi again Paula - just something I've been thinking about. We get into a big kerfuffle with our horses over something and push through to where there's a change and we feel we can quit on a good note. Like when you push through to a better understanding and then quit when there's some...

Good stuff! Thanks for the posts.

Another pair - more ground driving - page 3

Wow, you did great working through that. Congrats and keep at it and you will reinforce the good stuff. Little Barney that I got last fall was at first a total forwardaholic - could only stop him by facing him up to the RP panels. I line drove him a couple of times. I think it was anxiety...

How do you hook up your mini when alone?

I think it's great to hear so many different stories and ideas. Probably at some time we're all going to have to do almost everything, so it's good to be aware! Re: tying. A friend has a cool, level-headed, well-trained pony stallion that she rides and drives. She has good calm leadership and...

How do you hook up your mini when alone?

It is interesting to hear what people have been taught - different "you must never"s! I agree, safety first. And calm routine adds to safety, whatever you do. Lacey was taught to be harnessed and hitched while in the barn aisle, crosstied. With me, no barn aisle, I tie her up (I tie HIGH...

How do you hook up your mini when alone?

A little late responding here - we're all cryin' about spring not coming and wishing we were driving. LOL Here is our hitching place last year. (Very early in spring, lots of hair in this pic.) First pic - she is tied to the gate - you can see the halter around her neck - all harnessed up...

New to "This World of Mini's" & Driving

The best stops I get with my very forward mini mare is when I "think stop". How ever the "thought" gets down to the feet (subtle feel on the reins? reduction in my own energy? telepathy ?) it is the one that works and stops her feet AND her brain. She can pull like a freight train - I can pull...

Getting Ready to Jump Into Driving... Now, what else can I do with my mini?

Hey Paula, we learn as we go! Way better than sitting around with the minis in the field getting fat and lazy I think longer reins are something that doesn't occur to us till we're scampering around trying not to get run over. I like your double disk setup. Great pics all around. I think a...

Getting Ready to Jump Into Driving... Now, what else can I do with my mini?

I like a bigger mini Mine are 36-37, except Barney who is 32, still a strong, chunky guy, but very, very, very short legs.
