    Versatility Class unharnessing advice, please.

Kind of depends what you are doing with your horse too. . . most work horses and some pleasure driving (not show) horses wear their halters under their bridles. Most show horses do not, even at early stages of training. If I have to tie a harnessed horse, I use an extra large halter OVER the...

    Heavy in Hand

I know when I get nervous I tend to pull the head into the horse instead of drive the hindquarters into the head - then my horses get heavy because I'm pulling instead of pushing. Could that be part of it?

    Versatility Class unharnessing advice, please.

Mine all stand tied while I harness, but untied while I hitch. I work alone, and they are taught this from day 1. They also learn to stand tied when hitched, in case in the future I or someone else want to tie them to hitch / unhitch or while hitched, but otherwise I hitch while holding them...

    Versatility Class unharnessing advice, please.

So here's how I do it. . . .and practice at home first! Groom fastens halter around neck, unhooks cavesson and throatlatch. Person in cart gets out on right side, unhooks both traces and crupper. Groom unhooks left wrap strap, driver unhooks right (driver just works from back to front of...

    Nationals costs?

having said that, this is still the most reasonably priced national show I've ever shown at :-) even if CosSt go up to cover a second arena the cost is dramatically less than any other national or world show. and in my mind it would be well worth it to pay a little more and not be showing until...

    Nationals costs?

We have been going for 3 years. Show fees are 75 a stall, 20 a class for youth, 30 for ammy, 40 for open, 50 for stakes. that will help you to determine those costs. Plus office charge which I think is 10-20. Coggins I have anyway for our other shows. Health papers for me are 15. We camp...

    I am Big Pharma

The numbers are old, I did a cut and paste from a prior post. However, currently the CEO of Novartis, Joe Jimenez, receives around 2-3 M / year salary. I guess I was mixing rants - as one of the things I hear is how "greedy" big pharma is and how much they pay themselves. I'm saying compare...

    I am Big Pharma

Rant coming. . . .I have been inundated lately with posts / suggestions / ads about the evils of "Big Pharma" and/or advocating alternative "medicine". I have lately seen everything from "Big Pharma cares only about their own pocketbooks" to "Big Pharma has the cure for nearly all diseases...

    Clicker Training...Good or bad?

Yes, those are the ones. I use the ones with the wrist strap thingy - that way I don't lose too many. I get mine on Amazon - sets of 4 or 6 : ) That way it takes a while ot lose them all LOL

    Clicker Training...Good or bad?

I use it for certain things, not for all training. I've found it extremely effective for most horses, not effective for some. I have not had any problems with nipping - buut havingsaid that I really studied it prior to starting, and was very careful in how I started and what I used it for. I...

    Teaching a mini to rein?

This is actually something I have worked on in the cart believe it or not. I have one mini that is really talented. She currently can spin, roll back, and slide stop. We are working on lead changes. It gives us something to do that is "different" and fun. I got the idea because when I was...

AMHR Nationals Hurting Hunter & Jumper Exhibitors

I hope that they are not done entering exhibitors into the class listings - or that there will be a lot of post entries in these classes, as right now the class counts are horribly low : ( I'm hoping (since not all information is available) that they are still entering information, and more...

    observations of the horse industry

I agree with Stormy - when I showed big horses, there were breeders and there were "showers / trainers". Not everyone was a breeder. The breeders specialized in producing those high quality foals. But because there were performance options that were WELL REWARDED and HIGHLY REGARDED, horses...

AMHR Nationals Hurting Hunter & Jumper Exhibitors

One thing I will commend the committee for though is getting the schedule out so early! Especially with the change on Sunday, it is very helpful for me to see that this early in the year so I can plan my work accordingly. So a big than you for that : )

AMHR Nationals Hurting Hunter & Jumper Exhibitors

They Open Obstacle has been on the Sunday for the last two years - and is considerably smaller than the Amateur obstacle (especially the overs). . . I was also disappointed to see the hunter / jumper classes on Sunday. Usually we are done by around noon and can leave for our 11 hour drive home...

    Missing airliner

So I have a related question - why can transponders be turned off? What is the situation that would ever require a pilot to turn one off? Since 3 of 4 were turned off on 9/11, wouldn't you think they would have been made so they CANNOT be turned off after that? I don't understand. . . .

AMHA new Halter Stock Horse Division!

I don't think it's wrong to allow minis to have different types. It's completely different than AQHA, which has "types" within a breed, where performance horses essentially are completely different than halter horses. Why? Because we don't have a "miniature quarter horse association" or a...
