What is the reason for mares aborting??

Numerous times over the past 2 years, Ive found aborted foals in my pasture. The fetuses are always about 10-12 inches long, so about 4-5 months. My mares never show no sign of illness or trauma whatsoever. What is going on??? Its really disappointing....

What could be causing abortions???? :(

I've been sitting here researching it since the first post that mentioned it, reading about it, and learning about it. Could possibly be the culprit....from what I've read. I did have a yearling with a snotty nose about a week or two ago, but I didnt see anyone else with any symptoms since...

What could be causing abortions???? :(

I am always afraid of giving vaccines while mares are pregnant, I hear of so many complications from it. I keep my mares in a dry lot while they are pregnant, and feed them orchard grass when they get to their 8th month. Its what I've always heard was safe to do. Is this not correct?

What could be causing abortions???? :(

Thanks everyone for your replies.... Yes, I do have chickens, turkeys and guineas running around here for bug control.... Never thought that would be a problem since most farms have poultry. But if it is, I will get rid of all the birds TOMORROW!!!! How do I send in a fetus for testing...

What could be causing abortions???? :(

I had a mare to abort her fetus about a month ago, she was around 6 months along at that time. She didnt have any signs of a problem, just suddenly laid down while eating and slipped her fetus. I watched it happen...broke my heart! Then today, I came home from taking my kids out for the day...

    Mare swelling?

I just did a search for "edema in mare" and found ventral edema. Yep I do believe that's it! Nothing serious...they say it is just from the mare not moving around as much since they are uncomfortable. And that is what she has been doing, or should I say "not" doing. I let her out daily, but...

    Mare swelling?

Ok, so it doesnt sound like anything serious. I was just praying that wasnt a red flag for anything. She has just been stalled for three days, with some turn out time during the day of course. She is 9 yrs old. The foal is kicking like crazy the last couple days, and she is very uncomfortable...

    Mare swelling?

My mare is due to foal very soon.... she is getting a pretty big bag and has softened around her tail head. The foal has seemed to drop also. So it should be anytime! What I am needing advice about is the swelling under her belly. My other mares didnt do this when they were about to foal. So I...

    Whats wrong with filly's legs???

I am hoping that he is going to talk to his vet/ office partner tomorrow and see what he may know about this. And if HE doesnt, maybe they will contact other vets that may have dealt with this before. I will ask him myself to get opinions from other vets when I talk to him again. I'm sure...

    Whats wrong with filly's legs???

Well, my mare got a grain mix, a mineral/ salt block, and pure orchard hay daily for the last 7 months of her pregnancy, (before that I didnt own her). I am sure she was well taken care of during the first part of her pregnancy by her previous owner. I wondered that too about a deficiency, as I...

    Whats wrong with filly's legs???

I am giong to have a vet look at her ASAP. I havent had a foal born here before, so I first thought it was just because she was just born and rubbery legged.
