    Show Season 2022

What kind of showing are you interested in doing? I know of quite a few shows in Pennsylvania.

    Fly spray

A few years ago when I was at a boarding barn, I tried a feed through from SmartPak (don't remember the name). It had vinegar and garlic in it. Smelled like salad dressing. I think the ideas was to make flies not want to bite my horse. Eventually she wouldn't eat it any more. Now that the...

Where do you go for advice on showing?

If you want to be competitive in halter/stock or regular you will need to body clip. Horse needs to be groomed to the 9s. Depends on the horse's color when you should clip. I like to do about a week out to give them a chance to "bloom." I've been showing rated and non-rated for the past 10...

Anybody visit nursing homes with their Minis?

I don't think this is a viable career since most people do it as a volunteer and in their free time. Can't see nursing homes paying enough that it would be worth doing it as a full time job. Maybe Pony Parties where you can offer to bring the animals to someone's house and provide the entertainment.

    Conformation Opinions

Neck and throatlatch seem to be a bit thick, neck ties in low, back looks long, and slightly cowhocked in the back. She has a nice head and small (good) ears.

    High blood sugar

SmartPak has a laminitis and insulin resistance supplement that we have one of our minis on.

Showing- Harnesses, Carts, Halters Oh My!

I really like Star Lake Tack brand for harnesses and halters. Chrome or brass--the choice is up to you. Personally I like brass on red based horses and chrome on black based horses. I'm a person that likes a little more bling and flash so I like colored rail shirts, but a black blazer/jacket and...

    Harness recommendations

For the most part stay away from anything on ebay unless it is a good brand name like Lutke that happens to be on there. Most of what I see is garbage. I buy from Star Lake Tack and they have a variety of products and price points. Minitack.com is great too.

    Clipping just for fall outings

All depends on temperatures and how much maintenance you want to deal with. I'm in central VA and I just clipped my mare last week so I could take some pictures. I wouldn't do a full clip later than early September if you don't want to worry about blanketing. I have a show mid-November and I'll...

LOTS of questions on Showing + Driving

My answers are based on 24 years around horses and 6+ years around minis Showing: Is there a height limit of the horse? For AMHA 34 inches, AMHR 38 inches. Is it hard to place in competitions? For the shows I do no because there is usually less than 7 people in the class so everyone gets a...

    Am i crazy?

I know you mentioned not having a lot of money, but in the long run it is worth spending more on the horse you want. I wouldn't recommend getting a young horse, especially if you don't know much about horses. I would wait, continue learning and researching, and buy a quiet driving horse (if...

    Nutrena Feeds, a good choice?

I like the SafeChoice Senior for my senior big gelding. He looks a lot better when I give it to him in the winter. I didn't notice much difference for the easy keeper minis so I stuck with the cheaper low starch feed from a local feed mill.
