    Behavior question

My suggestion: Go back to basics, line driving in a controlled setting. Lots of repetition. Introduce to chaos over time, recruit people to be outside the arena, etc. making noise, lights flashing, music blaring, kids yelling. And once you are confident she has her head on straight, when you...

    Equine Dentist or Vet

In the 30 years I've had minis, I've always used a certified equine dentist. Sedation was never necessary. He loves horses and they know it. He used hand floats, only time I've even had an electric dremel used was on a mare with bad ramps.

    Best waterproof boots?

I love regular Muck Boots for sloppy wet areas when it's not too cold. In winter (we can get to 30 below zero) I use Muck Boot Arctic Pro boots that are about a size too big....and wear cotton socks, covered by wool socks. I never get cold toes, and they keep me dry.

How old can you breed a mare for?

I had a mare that was a strong producer and had her last foal at 24. She stayed in full "bloom", but I retired her after that as she was starting to move slower and stiffer. The mare will tell you when it is time to stop breeding her....when she seriously loses condition by putting everything...

    Tell me about clippers

The first clip of the season, I clip with the big Oster "cow" clipper with a 10 blade, going with the hair, washing the blades in Blade Wash every couple of minutes. For a show clip, I wash and rinse the horse thoroughly, saturate with Show Sheen, and clip them with a Double K using an A5 #10 or...

    ISO ASPC Stallion

Have you found one yet? Are you looking for Classic, Modern, or Modern Pleasure? There are some top notch pony breeders in your part of the country. Also, I know of one of the top breeders/trainers in Michigan that is dispersing his herd.

    I'm Baaaack

Honestly, no. I stopped showing a few years earlier. And what people need to understand - I grew up on a farm where each animal HAD to support itself. If it became a liability, it had to go. Back in the early years of quarter horses, I was a barrel racer, so it was for the sport. After...

    I'm Baaaack

Yeah, it's been a long time. Just thought I would drop by to say hi. After almost 60 years of owning horses (the last 30 with miniatures), I finally sold the last of them last fall. I'll be 70 soon, more aches and pains than I care to admit (all caused by horses of course), and it was time...

    Tell me about clippers

When clipping more than a couple, the Double K's were the ticket. But if clipping just one or two, and if you wants something with an adjustable blade that is light weight, the Oster Electromatic works OK. The blades adjust from a 10 to a 50. I use Blade Wash frequently (dipping the running...

    Frequency of feeding

Did that for over 30 years....left the house about the same time, feeding enough hay to get them through the day. Fed any grain/oats, more hay, cleaned and filled water tanks, etc. at night. Don't over-think it. They will be fine!

    AMHR Ownership Transfer

That's correct. In all the years I've been doing this, I had only one horse that measured consistently at the height on the papers. They typically grow a bit after made permanent at age 3.

    AMHR Ownership Transfer

They never use the height on the papers for AMHR shows. They use the height that they actually measure at the show.

    Web sites important?

Depending on your privacy settings, posting on FB or other social media can severely limit your exposure. The internet is world wide. I've sold many horses to people who have NO social media footprint because of the website.

Halter breaking an older stud and dealing with nipping

He nips because that is how stallions assert dominance over their herd. Right now he sees you as part of his herd and you must establish yourself as the alpha. Distance is helpful - leading from the shoulder will help. But he must be made to understand that it is not acceptable under ANY...

How much bigger can the stallion be than the mare?

I agree with the others. I don't care how many inches difference. If the stallion is somewhat taller but very fine-boned (and being skinny does NOT constitute fine-boned), and has a history of producing very fine-boned babies, even out of heavier boned mares, I would consider using him.
