One more consideration. Halter is only a small part of showing. There are plenty of world champion horses that don't place well in halter if at all. If your horse moves well and is sound but not conformed well, driving, jumping showmanship etc are all quite possible.

I feel like a total idiot. I want to post on the sale board (note I am not stating what here as I know that is inappropriate) but I can't find the sale board.

I've used both a palm sander and a drill with a sanding disc. The drill is much faster but takes a little practice. I'll probably take a block to the next show to get the hooves off the ground.
