Putting weight on an older Miniature gelding

We have an older Miniature gelding who has always been very easy to keep weight on, but this last winter hit him pretty hard and he lost a good bit of weight (he's in his late teens now). We had the vet out to float his teeth and we switched his grain over to Senior feed (our other Minis are on...

    Weight of yearling filly

I was reading the post about the new purina Miniature Horse & Pony feed and I saw a lot of comments about yearlings needing more than the average adult Mini (which makes since), but it made me a little paranoid about our filly She gets fed exactly the same as the rest of our minis (all adults...

    New photos :)

I posted a topic the other day on how you guys get good conformation shots of your horses. I haven't had the chance yet to try taking photos in the early morning light or with any help, but today I just went out and tried something new to get their attention I found one of my dog's squeaky frog...

    EPM- Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis

A vet in our area has "diagnosed" three horses with EPM. A friend of mine's horse was one of those three diagnosed. After talking to her I found out the vet only did a physical examination basically (tail pull, pressure points, and lameness exam). From what I've read about the disease it's...

    Rose is a YEAR old!

Well, Rose is offically a year old today She's turned into such a doll...just like her mama! Here are some pictures of her birthday today. Her mama (Pretty Woman) was pretty jealous of all the attention haha! Day 1: 1 year!: And her dam, Pretty Woman Thanks for looking!

How far away would you send your mare away to be bred?

It seems like it's really common in the minis to send mares away to be bred, but what's the farthest you would ship your mare? I love the looks of several stallions I've seen and think they'd be a great match for one of our mares, but I just don't know if I'd be willing to send her such a long...

Does AMHA list the foals of a horse?

My horse wasn't gelded until he was 5 and I'm just curious if he had any foals before then. Does the AMHA studbook thing even list the foals of a horse? If they do, his name is ASA Boy Blues Power of Love. Thanks!

    Picture taking....

We had to get pictures for registration purposes today, and getting decent pictures of the horses is so much more difficult than it looks! I thought I was being pretty clever when I tied a plastic bag around a dressage whip in hopes of getting the horses' attention, but most of the time this...

    What could she be?

Our mare, Daisy, is registered at a palomino pinto. I've always assumed she was tobiano, but after reading some of the posts on here about the different types of pintos I'm wondering if she is tobiano as well as something else. I've also always been skeptical about her being a palomino, because...

Have you ever had a horse suddenly get SPOTS?

Our 3y/o solid bay gelding suddenly has white spots! His sire is pintaloosa and I don't know about his dam, but it's insane looking! He's had a few white hairs (I'd hardly call them spots), but we clipped him and his face and back are covered in them...mainly his face! We were stunned when we...

    Skin fungus...

This is actually in one of my full sized horses, but I think it's still relevant. My horse got clipped for the first time ever in February and about a two months ago he started growing in some long hairs among the short hairs (which is expected). Then about a month ago I noticed his coat was...

What do you look for in a good driving horse?

I know everyone's opinion on this will differ, but what do you look for in good driving horse? A certain conformation, height, personality? Can any Mini drive (pleasure) or are there certain things a horse would have to have before you'd ever think of training them to drive? Thanks.

    Varnish roan?

In the past I've posted pictures of my mare and a lot of you said she was probably a varnish roan. I've read up on it some recently and I'd be kind of surprised if she wasn't a varnish roan...the only appy characteristic she doesn't have is the striped hooves, but she has four white socks. I'm...

Is there a way to find out dam's color?

Is there anyway I can look up the color of my mare's dam? I know her name and her registry number (AMHA). On my mare's papers it says her dam is DNA tested...what does that mean? Her sire is also DNA tested. I remember seeing her dam the day we visited her before she was weaned and she was solid...

    They grow up so fast...

Last June we had our first foal, and I honestly can't believe how fast she has grown up! It's almost sad to see how she looks more like a horse than a foal now. Her mama, our favorite mare(don't tell the others ), still thinks she deserves special treatment 24/7 lol. Gotta love the mares...

    Behavior in foal...

We were gone for several days on vacation leaving several members of my family (they live on the same property as us) caring for the horses. They THINK they know everything there is to know about the horses, and they're just starting to understand these are NOT dogs or kittens...they're muchhhh...

    Would you consider her overweight?

Would you consider our mare to be overweight? To me her topline seems kind of level, which I'm not sure if that's just conformation issue or because she's chunky her neck seems fine (not spongey or anything), so what do yall think?

Just some recent pictures of Guin and Rose :)

It's burning up down here in southern Alabama, but it's still fun to sit out and get a few pictures of the ponies...who actually seem to be handling the heat pretty well, unlike their human care takers haha Anyway, I hope y'all enjoy these

    Miniature Horses at nursing homes..

I'd really like to take one or more of our Miniatures to some local nursing homes or hospitals in the future, but I was wondering do they have to be certified like dogs do? What about the flooring, do they need shoes of some kind? I'd really love some info on doing this if you guys have any Thanks!

    AMHA registration...

We've never registered any horses before, other than permanent AMHA registration on one of our mares. So, I'm starting to fill out the paperwork for our filly this year and it has stocking, 3/4 stocking, and white to knee as options. Uhhh...what's the difference? As for the side shots can they...
