    Tail care in the winter

I have 5 mares. All of them have yucky tails. In order to remedy the situation I'm going to have to go out with hot water and carefully wash them all without getting anything else wet. I'm not looking forward to this! So once I have them all back to clean, how do I keep them that way?? Help!

Separating "bonded" horses: your input requested

A little more than 2 years ago, I "re-homed" two of my miniatures to a neighbor. The neighbor had lifelong horse experience and I knew it would be a good place for them. The neighbor is just a mile down my road so I was able to see them quite often. The neighbor contacted me in September to...

A surprise win, on a day when she almost stayed home!

It was tough show season for our club and for me. Work was out of control so I missed the first show in May when I simply could not pull it together to get everything and everyone ready to go. I finally cried "Uncle" when I couldn't finish clipping due to dull blades. The 2nd show was rained...

Driving Reins with buckle not clip

Does anyone know where I might find driving reins (for training) that have a buckle on the end where you connect them to the bit instead of a clip/snap?

Training / working in the heat

So I'm working with 4 of my horses right now on various training issues. It's not so bad as I can't overwork the yearling or the overweight 6 yr old, and the two 5 year olds I'm not working more than 30 minutes at a time either. But it's July and with that comes the onset of the summer heat...

AMHR Show question: Model Mare and Amatuer

I am looking at the class list for the DE Area 1 show over the 4th of July weekend. I will be showing (hopefully!) my yearling mare. I believe she's about 32" so would be in the under classes. Here are my questions: What is the "model mare" class for? I will be measuring her tomorrow along...

It's clipping time! My favorite time of the year :)

On the advice of a friend who is a professional groomer, I bought a pair of Andis horse/cattle clippers. Getting that fuzzy layer of hair off has never been so easy! Without having to bath first!!! It takes me about 20 minutes to get the body clipped. It's a rough clip to be sure, but it...

Really good clean up grooming when you can't use water due to weather?

Help! The weather gods have decided not to favor me with some at least semi decent weather this week so I could really get my 2 girls clean and ready to take to the PA Horse Expo on Thu/Fri. So, we're going to have to do it the hard way...without water. What are your best tips/tricks?? I...

    Neck covers

I'm taking 2 of my girls to the PA Horse expo in late February. Right now, I plan to clip their heads and necks. I have blankets but not blankets with neck covers. I'm looking at ordering a couple of neck covers. Can you use them alone? I've also thought about doing something with fleece...

First time at an event with my horse - PA Horse Expo Feb2014

I'm really excited about this but am also interested to hear any and all suggestions on what to expect and what to prepare for from those of you with experience in this area. My miniature club is going to have a booth/stall on Breed Row. I, along with a couple of other club members, am taking...

It's time for a round of "Name that horse!"

I'm running out of time and and need to get this new girl of mine registered in my name. Which means coming up with a name! I'm terrible at this because I'm afraid of making a bad choice. Her "barn name" is Ginger. This was the name of a Welsh/Arabian cross buckskin pony that I had the great...

An update on my hard keeper that we nearly lost

So many of you were so kind and comforting in your responses to me when I was going through the crisis with our oldest mare last year. Even though she was improved at this point in time a year ago, I really didn't expect we'd have her by this time this year. Well, not only is she still here...

    Fleece Hoods/Neckwraps?

I'm looking for a source for purchasing hoods and neck wraps made from fleece material. Anyone know of such a source?

Oh how one forgets in 4 short years! Bringing baby home

On Saturday, I brought home my new weanling filly. She's doing very well all things considered. I generally go out 4 or 5 times a day and spend a few minutes talking with her, rubbing her all over, doing some short walks on lead. In the morning, she's let out of her stall while 3 (of 4) of my...

What happens when you find you must use your head and not your heart

As most of you know, I brought home the most wonderful yearling colt from White Tail Miniatures on the 12th. His arrival was very much anticipated and a dream come true for me. I have stated more than once that I've been following (and drooling over!) Marlene and Holly's horses since I first met...

Can you tell me your experiences with gelding?

My new colt, Topper (White Tail Hynoptic Showstopper) is doing fabulously. Very relaxed, settled right in, eating and eliminating with no signs of anxiety or stress. The transition has been excellent for both of us as of today, Day 5. From the start, my goal is to have him gelded. I *do not*...

    My new boy is home!

After waiting for what seemed like forever, I was able to go pick up my new colt yesterday. I am over the moon about him. Not only is he a great looking horse, but he has the best personality and temperament. These are just a couple of shots that Marlene Graves took when I was there to pick him...

Training for showing in halter class

Can someone point me to a good website, recommend books, talk about your own process, etc. with regards to what you do to get a horse ready for a show, especially halter class? I've been showing at my club's shows for the last 3 years and have learned a ton. My 4 yr old silver bay mare has done...

So mad at myself: Hay/horse Nettles

About a month ago, I bought some grass hay from a new supplier. I really liked the looks of the hay...soft, fresh, green. The horses love it. I noticed some thorny stems with green berries in the hay. Not a lot but I pulled one or two stems out of every other flake or so. These are your...
