Contest! Share Your Mini Horse Photos!

Here's one more. These are two sisters (same sire and dam) born a year apart. They came to our farm 6 months apart. They are two of the four we originally started with in 2009. It is just crazy to think we've been on this journey for 10 years now! The things we have learned, the places...

Contest! Share Your Mini Horse Photos!

Well, it's been awhile since I came to visit but this was such a good idea, I had to come in and join the fun. I finally have a driving mini! The mare in my profile pic was started but we had an unfortunate wreck (neither of us was hurt!) that makes it unlikely she'll drive again (too...

    Article on trimming mini hooves

I wish there had been photos to go along with the description. If anyone could share theirs it would be great.

    Clippers

The best thing I've bought for grooming is a set of large "cow" clippers. I can body clip one horse in about 20 minutes to get the winter fur off. When I use these, I don't have to do baths first. Once I get the bulk of the hair of the body/neck, I then bath and do legs and face with my Andis...

    First time clipping: Any Suggestions?

Lovely little girl you have. Don't be so hard on yourself, she doesn't look too bad...and for me, the face is the hardest part, so you're already ahead of the game from my viewpoint. Everyone has their own process is what I've learned, here's mine: In an ideal world: I start clipping about...

    To Blanket or Not Blanket??

As with anything else with horses, the answer to this question depends on your particular circumstances as well as your horse's needs. Maryland, where I live, is not terribly wet most winters. Somewhat wet, but not what I imagine Washington is most winters...or year round for that matter. In...

    Uncatchable mare

I also have a 17 year old mare who I cannot simply walk up to and "catch" her. She has been with us for 6 years. She has not bonded with any of us humans in the family. She really isn't bonded in visible ways to the rest of the herd (4 other mares) but its there in its way. What I learned was...

    Feeding for Winter

During the harshest days of our Maryland winters, where we can be in the teens for a couple of days and even drop to zero but generally are in the 25-40 degree range, my horses get at least 2% of their body weight. I'd rather they come out a tad heavy in the spring than risk they actually get...

    Fencing and "Barn" help

I'm afraid I must echo those who say the $200 fencing budget is not going to get you far. We have 1.25 acres fenced. 1 acre of that is pasture, the other .25 is drylot and barn area. We use the 2x4 non-climbing horse fence. We used the cheaper type to start and regretted that decision...

    Am i crazy?

In April 2009, we brought home our first miniature horse. She was 10 months old. I had never owned my own horse of any size or breed, but had loved them and read about them all my life. At the time, I knew we had to get at least one more and after much thought/study, I chose to bring home an...

How much would you charge for clipping a mini?

In May, I paid $75 per horse to have someone meet me at a show in VA. I had already done a preliminary body clip (no legs or faces) and they were bathed and ready when the person arrived. She spent at least an hour on each....possibly as much as 90 minutes with the one horse because she had to...

    Minis in Delaware???

I'm in northern Maryland...Dover is about an 60-75 minutes from me. There is one board member, Bevann who lives in that general area. She used to breed minis but I think has "retired" though she's still involved with the Delaware mini club. Also, you could look up another board member...

    Halter?

For me, unless I'm in a show ring, halters are simply a tool. They don't need to be pretty. They just need to fit well for the horse I need to put it on. My horse rarely have any halter on....if they're not being actively worked it (i.e., grooming, training, etc.) they wear nothing. I have...

    International Buckskin Registry

I won't be registering her in this particular registry, but it is interesting to know the colors. Here's my 2 yr old "smutty" bucksin as a foal: Here she is about 10 days ago: As you can see in the first picture, her mother is sorrel and white. Her father is registered black.

Does anyone have photos of body clipped minis? I have a Color dilemma...

My "black" mare looks exactly like that when clipped. And when she has her hair bac, she's a really dark "sable" brown with black points. This is considered black in the miniature horse world. Most "big horse" people, including my vet, would call her brown.

    Underweight mare

If you think it's been more than a year since her teeth were done, I'd do that no matter what. Do you separate them when they are getting their grain so you know she's getting her 8 cups and the little one isn't sneaking some from her? If not, I would do that so that you know she's getting...

    International Buckskin Registry

Interesting! I just checked out their website and it says my 2 yr old "smutty buckskin" would be called a Grulla in their registry. http://www.internationalbuckskin.com/colors-eligible.html

    Not eating well-need help

I second the suggestion to get a full blood work up done. Do you have an equine hospital near you? I spent 2 full years trying to figure out what was wrong with my picky eater. We tried so many things: every food you can think of, every type of hay available in our area, ulcer meds, fat...
