    The end of an era...

Here comes a post I thought I wouldn't have to write for many more years to come. My dearest, darling Appy died yesterday evening. No apparent cause. He was 22 years old and has been one of my very special heart horses since even before his arrival in 2004. Woodstock North's Who's Appy Now...

Abbie is overdue (and on our barncam!) 342 days on 3/16/14! pix inside!

Thanks! Well, here we are at 371 and nothing big has changed... her bag is about the same size, however the nipples are now pointing down instead of towards each other.... I am so tired I just want to hang her from the barn beams and bat her like a pinata until the baby falls out! A friend...

    CONFUSED

Can you get a vet to check her again? That way you'll be sure it isn't a false pregnancy. My gal Abbie was looking pregnant but not ready at 343 days from last breeding and so I had the vet check her then... there was a live foal, so I put her in a camera stall and put a foaling pager on her...

    Record-breaking Gestations for Minis?

here's a friend holding Abbie on the day she was born (at 292 days along!) She was my earliest live foal and was born out in the turnout with a group of mares, I found her at breakfast... obviously I wasn't expecting a foal at 292 days and her dam hadn't even had a bag! We lucked out and all...

Abbie is overdue (and on our barncam!)

This was Abbie with a friend of mine on the day she was born (at 292 days along!) Today is 371 - a friend says she's going to have it between 2 and 4 am during the lunar eclipse tonight. I have my fingers crossed!

Forgot to add to FAQ - no chance of fescue either - we are in Southern California, there is no pasture, only dry lots, we feed alfalfa pellets. She's munching on a 3-way "forage hay" - oat/wheat/barley. We also use it to "top dress" the wood-pellet bedding in the stalls once the foals are...

    Gestations for 2014

All our other mares this year have gone before 342... (Well, I don't know about Prissy, she was pasture bred, but she delivered right in the mid-range of the dates I had listed for her...)

Abbie is at 370 days today! FAQs: I have been breeding horses for over 35 years, and have been a professional "mini mare midwife" for the past 15 years, foaling as many as 30 mares per year. (this ain't my first rodeo! ) Yes, breeding date is certain, she was brought home from stallion...

    Record-breaking Gestations for Minis?

Yes, honestly, if I didn't have confirmed breeding dates (as in, the mare was delivered back here within days after she went out of heat!) I wouldn't be so concerned. And Abbie is a mix of ready/not ready signals.... but she's also now 370 days since her last breeding date! My longest big mare...

    Record-breaking Gestations for Minis?

Abbie (whom some of you may remember was born at 292 days gestation - with a single hand-breeding date as guide) is now at 369 days along in her 2nd pregnancy (her first went about 330 days). She is a young mare, healthy, no signs of distress (except in her owner! ) Live foal palpated by...

    KnockKnockKnock Penny! Appaloosa (really!) filly!

Our lovely Prissy blessed us with another colored filly this year (although the color was hard to see on this one!) Silver bay with sclera, mottling, light hooves and some white splashes under her foal coat on her hips.... Penny is as beautiful as her full sister Prize! Here she is...

Abbie is overdue (and on our barncam!)

Abbie is 363 days today... stallion owner has confirmed breeding dates (plus she came back home right after!) and our vet palpated a live foal at 343 days. Abbie has the look of a mare just now starting to think about foaling, she is just now developing a bag. No fescue in SoCal (no grass! We...
