    CDEs...... Help? Advice? More help?

I compete in CDE's and yes the mini division (called VSE) is one of the fastest growing divisions. The dressage phase is judged just as ridden dressage and is the basis for the whole event. Driven dressage is a bit harder to train for than ridden, especially for the VSE's since we aren't able...

Converting a blind/blinder bridle to an open bridle

Call Janie at Chimacum Tack. She can help you.

    Traces...tight or loose?

Katie, I fully agree with you. What is going on in the breed show ring is the reason why I only do CDE's now. I was just trying to not get into the usual their wrong and we are right war. Its really comparing apples to oranges, as it is two different styles of driving so I have decided to...

    Traces...tight or loose?

Having come from the breed show ring after participating for 15 years and now doing CDE's exclusively for the past 4 years, I can see both sides of the picture. There are some (albeit few) in the breed show ring that do perform with rounded backs and engaged rear end which is nice to see...

where to find a good marathon timer

I used to just use stop watches, now I use a wrist eventing watch. Dover Saddlery occasionally put them on sale or check Amazon. If you look under eventing timers you will find more options. I highly recommend having a back up as well. I actually use a wrist timer on each wrist and have a stop...

Grazing Muzzles - How, Why (or Why Not!) You Use Them

I use grazing muzzles on two of mine anytime they are out in pasture. They have plastic hooks that do break easily. If you have a horse that is pre-cushing than a grazing muzzle is a necessity, otherwise they won't be able to be out on pasture. My ponies had no problems with the muzzles, after...

Skunk River HDT report or how to mess up a championship

This is a little long, hope you don't mind. Skunk River HDT was another learning experience (I seem to have alot of those). I competed my Prelim VSE (Shay) and training level small pony (Lex). I will try and keep this short, but added a little detail for those who seem to like it. First off let...

Where to get wooden cart for CDE?

I think it would be a good cart to get you started and see how you and your pony like it. You might want to add a sided wedge seat to keep you in place on the bench seat and maybe a toe bar to help you hold on if you decide to move up the levels. The only other thing you run into on these style...

Where to get wooden cart for CDE?

If you are going to use an easy entry cart, it would be advisable to get steel spoked wheels for it. The bike spokes on the regular wheels that they usually come with, will bend and can break when hitting a bump, crevice, creek, etc at a good trot.

Where to get wooden cart for CDE?

I don't think wooden carts are the best idea for CDE's especially for A's. They are good for pleasure shows and maybe cones and dressage, but I don't know if they would hold up to the marathon and be light enough weight. I believe most wooden carts (road carts, meadowbrooks) that could hold up...

How To Tell Which Direction To Go...

There is all kinds of different driving from the breed show driving AMHA and AMHR (which Mr. T touched on concerning AMHA)as well as recreational trail driving, pleasure show driving, and combined driving. Each requires something a little different in training. I agree with Andrea that it would...

opinions from those who drive pairs/teams

The pole is not suspended on mine. Once I attach it with the pin there is nothing to hold it up...or am I missing something? I use is mainly driving a single small pony to it than a pair. However, I do have his match coming up and hope to pair them up next year.

Al, did you use neck yokes on your Glinkowski with your pair?

Indian Hills HDT in IL (aug)

I don't think wire wheels will be an issue at training level, especially at Indian Hills. Indians hills is an HDT and has a pretty tamed down marathon from what I was told and very beginner friendly. The main issue with the wire wheels is that they will not hold up to alot of hard, sharp turns...

    Pairs

Glnkowski Mini Mix (I own) or Hardwick Tadpole (I have driven) are both 4 wheel vehicles for CDE's. There are some others but these are the two that I have dealt with that can handle the job and seem to be most popular. As for harness, probably the most popular for CDE's in miniature or small...

Indian Hills HDT in IL (aug)

I am hoping to, although not 100% sure at this point. I will have my VSE in prelim and my small pony in training and you are more than welcome to tag along. I will also be at HIckory Knoll CDE in WI middle of July and Skunk River HDT in Ames, IA end of June.

Quick question about cart metal color in greater detail

What you don't want to see is brass on some parts and nickel/stainless/chrome on other parts (including the harness), that is what they mean by don't mix metals. If you have a brass rein rail and chrome hubcaps, then you would paint the hubcaps black or order brass ones to have a proper turnout...

Why Do You Breed or Why Have You Stopped?

We started breeding minis in 1992 and shipped foals all over the country including 15 to China. I have always enjoyed driving and bred for driving horses mainly, but put my own driving on the back burner to the breeding operation. 7 years ago, I bought a store that I worked at and knew that I...

Driving...light, medium, heavy work and feed questions

I recommend talking to the nutritionist of the feed you use. If you are training for a full CDE, you will need to change his amount of feed, as his training times go up. My CDE ponies are on almost twice as much feed during the show season as they are on during the winter, increasing both hay...

    Pairs vehicles

I forget your in australia. You might try and get in touch with Janelle Marshall, she might be able to help you out. She resides here in the US but drives for australia at the world championships as that is her home country. I believe she still has family there. Her web page is...
