    How's the Weather ?

Supposed to be -5 actual tomorrow night with -30 wind chills. I gave Rowan a whole extra bale in a net with larger holes so he can eat as much as he needs. Nothing compared to places further north but as MaryFlora mentioned, the big swings are always a little worrisome, it'll be in the 40s...

Irritation near the hoof on the tendon

If she isn't lame I wouldn't worry about it. It may only hurt her when you touch it. From what I understand it can be hard to get rid of, depending on the cause, but I have never dealt with it myself - hopefully someone who has can chime in!

Irritation near the hoof on the tendon

Could be scratches? Hard to see, they are so hairy this time of the year. :) https://vet.purdue.edu/hospital/equine/tips/understanding-and-treating-scratches-in-horses.php

    Winter water

On the flip side, I have had horses who thought it was treat time when you broke ice off the tank and threw the pieces on the ground. Crunch, crunch! They all have their own preferences I guess!

Right...and some say in the text to go behind the withers and then show a picture of it going over the top of the withers! For some formulas (like the KER one that keko recommended) it's probably more important for accuracy that the tape is vertical, and for physical measurements (like for a...

The poop may be a separate thing but re: the dirt - is it possible he's eating roots? Sometimes grass roots can have a lot of sugar in them (i.e. taste sweet) so horses will dig them up and eat them. If it's just plain dirt then I got nothing. :)

I am sorry, I didn't realize the formula specifically instructs measuring over the withers, and I don't mean to suggest the formula is wrong. Just that heart girth is typically NOT taken over the withers, so it's a bit confusing.

I don't think you want to include the wither in the measurement. For a lot of minis and ponies it probably doesn't make too much difference since there isn't much there but for say a TB, it would add MANY inches to the measurement and really throw it off. Heart girth is taken at the place...

    Walking/Hiking in 2023

About 2 miles with Rowan. Although he probably did three, because he was being a noodge and ended up doing some extra work. :)

    Ok bits are they necessary

OMG the thought of trying to drive Rowan bridleless,:eek::eek: It is going fairly well ground driving him in the halter with the rope nose. He definitely doesn't love the bit but he has a lot of overall anxiety once he's hitched to the cart - any whip with a lash is also an issue for...

    Supplements

Folks with goats/sheep - do be careful with horse supplements that contain copper. Horses need it - well, goats and sheep do too - but there can be a lot in horse supplements which can be toxic to goats and sheep. Definitely separate your horses to feed their VMS/ration balancers if you have...

    Supplements

The only way to know for sure if your horse needs supplementation is to have your hay analyzed. Most US and Canadian grass hays are low in magnesium, copper, and zinc. Alfalfa is very very high in calcium so you need to watch the Ca:Mg:P balance if you feed a lot of alfalfa. Whether you need...

Yeah, Redmond salt is basically just dirty salt - it has minerals in it but none of them are very useful for balancing things for horses (similar to the red salt blocks - it's mostly iron which horses generally already get way too much of). You're much better off with a VMS or ration balancer...

Walking/Hiking with our minis and ponies - Mile Tracker!

I got my ribbon today, thanks Cayuse! I think we are pretty near each other so maybe I'm the first to receive it. I love the orange color!

    Walking/Hiking in 2023

About a mile with Rowan today - it was windy with horizontal snow flurries and I hadn't had him out in several weeks so did a bunch of long-lining in the ring first and then a short out-and-back on the trail.

    Mini Dental Work

If a tooth is there, it will grow out as it wears down until it runs out, which may be never, or may be when the horse is on the elderly side, barring other things like excessive wear for some reason. But if the tooth is completely lost, then it's gone for good. They do lose "baby teeth" when...

    Mini Dental Work

Is she a baby? If not then if the tooth is lost, it's never coming back. The tooth opposite it (on the same side of the mouth) will need frequent attention to keep it from over-growing since it has no opposing molar to wear it down. I'm just assuming this is a molar.
