    Feeding questions

Vicki, You'll probably get a different answer from everyone of what and how much to feed but here are my 2 cents worth: watch their weight and adjust as needed. It will depend on how much they need to look of good weight, eventually. I recently heard from an "expert" donkey owner friend that...

    I'm Back!

Thanks, everyone! Teri, that spotted baby of yours is WAY too cute! Two of our BLMs came from Nevada NE of Sparks. They were captured last Dec. They were brought to New Mexico in May for an auction put on by the BLM. Then, about 2 months ago, I got a call from a friend and fellow member of our...

    Poopiong in Hay

I swear, these donks are not the cleanest of equines! Ours seem to go wherever the mood hits them. We use rubber tubs and metal hanging mini feeders w/o a problem and then, they don't mess in their feed, at least. You might try moving their poop to a "more acceptable" spot and leaving some there...

HI, I AM STILL HERE, PETUNIA IS TOO!

I sure don't enjoy waiting for a baby when you don't know WHEN it's coming! I feel for you...especially when you don't know your jenny's "patterns" for foaling. Anyway, just remember that nature seems to work pretty well most of the time. I figure they are close when they look like they can't...

    Gracie Dropped - now what??

Hi! As I read your post and everyone's replies, it's an exciting time, isn't it? We recently had a standard donkey born from our BLM jenny and that was a whole new experience. We have witnessed several mares (minis and full-sized) and one mini donkey so we're not really new to foaling but I get...

    I'm Back!

Hey, Corinne and group! Due to Corinne's e-mails, I've actually sat down and updated my address, etc so that I could "check-in" with what's going on in the mini donkey and horse world...or at least on this forum! I just noticed that I've not been here for over a year! After doing our time as...

How much weight can my horse's hold

OK, first of all it's HAFLINGER, not Halflinger...one L. As an owner, I hope you do a lot of reading and talking to other owners before you jump in and purchase one. There is some incorrect info being put on here about them. Some "desired characteristics" mentioned are not desired in the breed...

    Our First Donkey!

HA...the word I caught was "first"! Get ready, Stephanie! ALL of us can probably agree on "more will be in your future!" She sure looks nice to me! She's a pretty girl! Wait until you begin training her...my husband recently drove his standard donkey in a show the 5th time he ever wore...

    Question to Donkey Breeders....

MA, from what I've seen, the price depends a lot on the location, the breeder/owner, and the quality of the animal. Big well-known breeders can get $10,000+ and I've seen them sell at horse auctions for $200.-$700. I guess what I'm trying to tell you is that it's anybody's guess and what the...

Gini, did you get my e-mail sent this morning? Check that and you should know more about what we can do here in NM for this little guy. Colleen/StarWish

    Finally born

CONGRATS, Runaway! Boy, she's a cute little leggy jenny! Look at those great ears. I've been told that the longer the distance between those ear tips when they are straight out to the sides, the more valued the donkey was. Enjoy! Colleen/Starwish

    Sammy's Made Himself at Home

DunPainted, I don't know how much you know about donkeys but they can play very roughly, especially the geldings. As a child, I happened to be at a vet's office when a man bought in a pony whose spine had been broken by a larger horse as they played. This has prevented me from ever turning our...
