Don't rush to retire you or him !
What about ground driving a lot around your place - might condition him to the gun shots and give you more confidence. Maybe there is a way you can haul to place to drive that is more secure . So take some time off but don't sell your things - just re think...
one suggestion when ground driving put the reins thru the tugs ( where the shafts go ) not thru the turrets on the saddle - It will be easier to steer
when the reins are thru the turrets when ground driving often the horse will turn around and face you -
This video is of my gelding Machiotto ( Mackie ) in his 4th week of driving training. He started to pull the drag last week. My trainer said - he may be hitched next week if he continues to progress as he is in the video. This trainer is a very experienced with driving horses - trains all sizes...
Having a horse trained to drive by a professional is cheap insurance . I guarantee 3 months of professional training is cheaper than one trip to the emergency room after a driving wreck !
Had an early Christmas present this week. Got to drive my youngest ( 4 yr old ) gelding, Cinco for the first time ! He has been at the trainer since October and will be ready to come home mid Jan. I drove him in the arena then took him for a short drive on my friends trails. All went very well...
Someone posted the address of the USDA/APHIS office in Ft Collins. That is the address for the Animal Care branch . Animal Care does not handle import /export of horses. You need to contact USDA/APHIS/Veterinary Services. They would inspect quarantine farms and the approval of international...
I have a friend with a 31 " mini and the Bellcrown looks quite appropriate for her size. My 32.5" gelding will be back from the trainer in Jan and for a while I will use my EE but someday hope to get a Bellcrown for him . I love my Smart Cart but that is for my 36 " gelding Magic.
My older...
I have a Smart Cart for my 36 " mini and love it . Air Bags are in my opinion the only down side of the SC - you have to remember to check/fill them before you drive . I use a pump that I found at a bike shop for air shocks on racing bikes for my air bags and it is easy to pump them up. A...
I can not advise putting a goat with a mini - sorry - minis are a lot bigger than goats and really could hurt or even kill a goat. Also if your fences are not goat proof ( the saying if the fence will not hold water it won't hold a goat is almost true ) the goat will get out and doubt you will...
Myrna please reconsider not posting to this forum. I think most of us look forward to your posts and learn a lot from them. I come from a big horse back ground and started riding saddleseat when I was 12. I was lucky to have as my first driving horse a been there..done that mini who taught me a...
You also might consider having your mini trained to drive. There are many driving events ( other than the breed ring ) that do not require that a horse be registered to compete. Look into carriage driving events in your area.
The first event is the pleasure driving trial at Tom O'Carroll's. Magic looks so good when he is clipped but I don't want to clip just for vanity May just clip his head /neck . In Texas we consider 40 "cold " . I am sure you northerners find that quite funny !!!

I have 2 driving trials in November . The weather is finally starting to cool off in Texas ( suppose to be in the 40's at night -hey that is cold for us down in Texas !! ). Magic was clipped the first of September but is already getting furry and I am debating about clipping for these pleasure...
I live about 20 miles south of Little America and that area and mine are fine although we all had heavy smoke a few days ago from the Bastrop fires. Bastrop is about 50 miles north of me. There were other fires west of Austin and out by the lakes above Austin at the same time as Bastrop. I have...
