How do you gain an abused horse's trust?

Like the others have already shared - time and patience. Let me add food:o) In my experience, instead of trying to approach her, wait for her to approach you and reward her with a treat. Maybe put it on the ground in front of her with some distance and gradually decrease the distance. Don't try...

long term care of insulin resistent miniature horses

I have the opportunity to add info about IR in minist to The Book of Miniature Horses. I would like to include testimony from an owner of an IR mini who has had the horse several years and what kind of long term care they've used and its success. How is the horse doing, etc. Thank you! You can...

    Tube worming minis

Hi folks, what has been your exeperience in tubing worming your minis? I has someone ask me about it. Her minis reacts by feeling puny for a few days after. She was worried if the vet over doses. I nver had mine tube wormed that I can remember. I used paste wormers. it just seems a bit tramatic...

The Heat, never in my life.......

I feel for all of you and your horses. At 65 years old I sit here and wonder how in the world I did it - I can remember being at the State 4-H Championships with my 4-Hers and it would be 100+ degrees. Somehow we and the horses survived. It's all I can do to go out and water my tomatoes now, I...

    micro chipping

Thanks for the great info. What info is on the micro chip? Is it ID only or is health info as shots, coggins, etc included? Is there a website you can recommend where I can learn more about it?

    micro chipping

I was just wondering if horse folk are using the micro chip id for their horses as are used for dogs? it seems it would be a good idea, not so much for runaways, although that does happen on occasion, but I am thinking as a tool in case of theft, or even in sales where a horse's background might...

Anyone had their horses teeth checked in a halter class? My mini wasn't ready

I agree, the judge should have asked you to show the teeth, not do it himself. I'll never forget the fist time my 4-Hers had a showmanship judge ask to see their horses's teeth. He just walked down the line and made a gesture at each one with his hand mimicking a horse opening its mouth. They...

    Peanut is not feeling well

Yes, I'd have a vet come check him out. Once we had an Arab who was having trouble eating and the vet found a big splinter of wood stuck in her gum where apparently she'd been chewing on the fence or stall. Hope he's back 100% soon!

    Birthday Parties

I used to do birthday parties back when I had my riding school. They came to me and I charged $100/hr with the parents providing their own refreshments and decorations. I provided "pony rides" with my lesson horses and ponies (we led them around the riding ring), a place (barn lounge) for the...
